“Well actually Madi, there’s someone who would much rather be going to prom with you, and he’s downstairs...” Madison looked at her brother curiously. Ever since Roderick told her that he couldn’t make it home for it, Mason had offered to let her third wheel with him and Jane. She’d accepted because third wheeling beat not going at all. She would probably just hang out with some of her friends, or hang out with Spencer against the wall. Her hair was curled. Makeup perfected. Dress on. She took one last glance in the mirror when her brother old her that. “Hold on Mason, let me slip on my shoes.” She slipped on her modest black 3 inch heels, and walked  half way down the stair case before she saw her surprise. There sat Roderick, in a suit, talking to Jane. Madison nearly fell with how quickly she tried to get down there. “Rod.. I thought you said you couldn’t make it... That you had a paper due..” Roderick started explaining about getting it in early, just so he could see her. She wanted to cry tears of joy, but there was no time to fix ruined makeup. She just threw her arms around him, “I’m glad you made it honey.”

“Madison go clean your room.” She could just roll her eyes, but follow he mom’s instructions. Yet, as soon as she got to cleaning out under her bed, she stopped, and just sat down. She finally found it. His lucky sweater. She slipped off her soft, comfy t-shirt, and slipping it on, finding comfort in the knit. Yet she managed to start talking to herself. “It still smells like him.” She momentarily remembered she needed to finish cleaning, so she just shoved the rest of it under the bed,before texting Roderick, “Facetime? I found something.” She adjusted the just barely too long sleeves with a smile. As soon as she answered, he noticed it, “Wait, is that my sweater?” Madison just nodded. “I was cleaning, and I found it, and it’s super warm, and I promise I’ll give it back next time I see you. I just needed to put it on cause it reminded me of you, and I was cold, and.....” Madison’s ramble got cut off by his few words, “It looks cute on you.”

Madison couldn’t help her eye roll. Ever since he moved to New York, she couldn’t help but notice her boyfriend’s concern with what he ate. She didn’t attempt to bite back her sarcasm, “That’s odd, because 3 months ago, you had no problem with eating my mother’s red velvet cake.”

“You’d tell me if you were skipping meals on purpose, right?”

Madison shook her head quickly, “Rod darling, if Coach Sue caught me purposely skipping meals, she’d have my uniform. I can’t do that to my body. I need calories to burn in practice. I’m just trying to get this project finished. I’ll eat when I’m done.”

Mason found himself just curled up there. Kurt and Tina were at work, and Madison was in rehearsal. He was the only person Mason could call. As soon as he heard the knock, he tried his best to dry his tears so his friend couldn’t tell he’d been crying, despite the fact that once Roderick was inside, tears continued to pour. “R-rod, I don’t know what to do.. W-what if she wants me back? What if she wants the dress back? I can’t give it back to her. I sold it, and my wedding ring too. I sold them to get Moritz and Kurt’s ring, and my typewriter.” He tried to hide his face, “Rod, What do I do?”

She knew this day had to come, and deep down, no matter how good it was gonna be for him, it didn’t make Madison feel any better. There were so many what ifs. What if Roderick dumped her the minuet he got there? What if he cheats? What if he meets another girl? What if he just forgets all about her? Tears spilled out of her bright green eyes. She wrapped her arms around him tightly, not wanting to let go, even if she knew she’d have to eventually. She whispered, “I love you.”

He officially had achieved his dream. Roderick was going on tour, with his band. Yet, there was still something missing. He was about to go out in front of a sold out crowd in Dublin, and sing his heart out. He should be proud, or nervous, or some positive emotion. Yet, he looked sad. One of his band mates snarled, “Meeks, quit pouting cause your girl’s not here. We’re on in 5.” Roderick managed to fake a smile and go out there and give his heart to the performance, even if the girl that has his heart is back in Ohio.

As soon as they got done, and they were back in the car, Roderick pulled out his phone, completely forgetting the time difference till he heard her groggy, sleepy voice on the other end, “Ugh hello?” Roderick’s lips finally held a genuine smile, “Hey Mads, princess.” He finally heard her voice perk up, “Rodrick, babe, it is 3:45 in the  morning. Don’t get me wrong, I love you, but what the hell do you need?” He bit his lip. He’d forgotten about time zones. “Well, i just wanted to tell you I love you, and I miss you, and I promise I’ll be home in time for you birthday.” They quickly said their goodbyes, so Madison could go back to sleep.
