“Wow. Well, aren’t you a regular Veronica Mars. Way to solve this week’s mystery.” — Marissa Cooper
If there was one word to sum up Sutton Matthews in high school, it would be popular. Just like any other girl living on the rich side of Newport Beach, California, with a poolhouse, a large pool, three cars and a house you could have three families in, Sutton was spoiled, popular and well liked around town - unless you count those who actually went to public school and wanted to have a situation like those in a private school had. Ever since she was just a baby, Sutton would have absolutely everything. When she was a baby, it would be the latest baby clothes made by specific designers her mother hand-picked, and the best nannies her father made sure weren’t there to kidnap their one and only daughter. It was fair to say that Sutton Matthews had it all, from scratch.
High School in itself was nothing like a public high school. With her mother and father their paychecks put together, Sutton could have gone to any kind of school, all around the world, but wanting to stay in Newport Beach, California, they eventually opted for Carden Hall Elementary and Junior High School for Boys and Girls a nd Sage Hill High School, both located in Newport Beach. They wanted the very best for their daughter. Of course, Sutton was extatic and thrilled to be able to go to such a school as Carden Hall and even to Sage Hill, especially when you didn’t have to wear a uniform at Sage Hill. But she was also happy because she could finally find friends who she could hang out with after school or even at their house.
Ever since Sutton’s third year and last year at Carden Hall, when she turned 13, she started to hate her mother. Not because she wanted to stay young forever, but because she saw her cheat on her father. Sutton’s father was a person the young girl admired more than anything in the world, and seeing her mother do such an act that could ruin everything they had, well, it wasn’t something she liked, at all. And every year that passed, her hatred for her mother continued to grow, and it started to show. At first, she was a model student, perfect grades, perfect friends, perfect everything, but soon, that started to decrease. Her grades went from an A to a C, and slowly, but surely, Sutton started to hang out with Isobel, a girl she had officially named her best friend at Carden Hall, more than at home, that eventually lead to shop lifting and attending parties were parents weren’t there, and drinking.
Things didn’t get better when she befriended one of the bad boys from Newport Union, a public school. Daryl was one of those guys who didn’t seem to care if the girl was rich or not, as long as she was up for a good party and up to taking drugs, he was game: and Sutton definitely was. Opting to eventually give up her virginity to him, she soon realized that that was a bad decision. A week after she had given him her virginity, he stopped calling her. He didn’t even pick her up at school, and she realized that the only reason he ever spoke to her or partied with her was because she was one of those self-preserved rich girls ready to give it up for the first to come.
Graduating from Sage Hill a year after Isobel, Sutton knew she wanted out of Newport Beach. Granted, she would have to leave everything behind, but her father left her with a pretty good amount of money on her bank account that would come in handy. But when searching on the internet for a way out of Newport, Sutton fell upon an advertisement of TWY. At first she was skeptical, but figuring Barcelona, Spain, would be far enough for her to actually disappear to, she applied for the show, in hopes that her fashion expertise and ways of planning the best parties - in Newport Beach that is - would come in handy in Barcelona.
Despite what people might tell you in Newport Beach, Sutton isn’t as bad as she seemed to be. Yes, she was a complete bitch during high school, and she had ways of cursing out snide remarks that could hurt people their feelings, but once someone got to know her, or when her mother wasn’t around, Sutton is actually nice. The girl has a thing for fashion, and it is obvious with the way she mixes clothes up. Many people wondered how Sutton and Isobel have been friends for as long as they have, but if people would ask Isobel who Sutton really was, they’d automatically get a response that would most likely make the blonde girl emotional. ‘She’s emotional at times, a great listener, god, she’s helped me through so many rough patches with all my ex-boyfriends, including actually insulting them to the point where they came up to my front door the next day and apologized. She’ll always be there with a bucket of ice cream and girly movies when you’re having a day off, and yes, she can be a bitch at times, okay, maybe a lot, but she’s actually really nice. You should give her a chance.’ - Quote by Isobel Greene, Sutton’s best friend.
