Född Död | I Smärtan, Fri
I’ve drummed since age 10, and rarely does a high hat entrance me. But Född Dödd hypnotizes me with these little metallic taps. The taps, which begin staccato and gradually ebb in and out of softness, are like little baby footsteps. If in a club, this track would play between two others--it’s not the main parade. But incongruity provides an opportunity to reflect inward.
‘Verbed out vocals, a pad and quiet arpeggiations talk behind the scenes, and provide necessary melody, but I only really care about this high hat. It’s the focal point of what feels like an old, blurry memory. Reverb does that. It makes things feel far away and, quite literally, reflects the near past. When melody is far and auxiliary percussion is near, the world seems organized as if earth (note, plant on the track art) is just a vessel. It’s what we make of our bodies that counts.
