Lambchop - Superstar in France (1997)
From Lambchop's 3rd LP Thriller, a great cover of F.M. Cornog's tune that adds another layer of pathos to the proceedings.

I was bummed that I missed out on Merge's first reissue of East River Pipe "Mel". I knew it was out. I listened to it, but I dragged my feet for a day, and then poof, it was gone.
Now, it's back, and for how long is anyone's guess. I was first introduced to F.M. Cornog's genius many years ago when I found "Poor Fricky" at a Tower Records in Bangkok, Thailand. I listened to that CD all summer long. I love the clean sound of Cornog's guitars and his utter knack for melody. I'm pretty sure I had at least another ERP CD, but when I looked in my collection I couldn't find it.
Whatever CD I had, it clearly had "Miracleland" on it. This reissue has the song on it, and I'm quite familiar with the song. For my money, it's one of the best East River Pipe (New York, New York) songs out there ("Make A Deal With The City" is up there too). Song for song, "Mel" might be the strongest ERP album out there.
I can't imagine that F.M. Cornog wasn't influenced by The Velvet Underground, Galaxie 500, Guided By Voices, Yo La Tengo, or even Leonard Cohen.
East River Pipe - Hey, Where's Your Girl (1994)
Sometimes I can't quite tell what F.M. Cornog is getting at in his songs, but he creates a mood that sometimes is exactly what i want to hear.
We're going inside
East River Pipe - Hide My Life Away From You (1995)
I recently posted another tune from 1995's Even the Sun Was Afraid, but this has been the soundtrack to my bored and sometimes depressing summer.
You're so special Not me, just you
East River Pipe - Here We Go (1995)
A bit of catchy miserablism from F. M. Cornog, sporting a Vox organ bit straight off a Sir Douglas Quintet tune.
One of these days, it's gonna be the last time
East River Pipe - King of Nothing Never (1999)
For my 1500th post
Here’s your paper crown…
I usually start out with a ball park idea of what I want to do, but I've learned over the years that you must be very flexible. Writing songs is like sculpting from stone. You might look at a stone and say, "I'm going to make a beautiful, sad woman out of that stone." So, you start out to make just that... Chip, chip, chip... But as you continue, you realize that the stone has other ideas... the stone has a mind of its own!... And this stone don't want no "beautiful, sad woman" shit! This stone wants to be something else! So, you just go with it. You don't force it. You just let it ride.
