hhHH YES I LOVED IT everything about it was incredible

especially the emphasis they placed on the relationships of the d/Deaf characters and their “voice” performers.  I didn’t expect them to acknowledge the voice performers as being onstage at all but the way they handled it was beautiful, the way those paired-off sets of actors interacted, when they looked to each other before responding, etc.

They didn’t let you forget about the context of d/Deaf characters, or disability in general.  Like, it wasn’t just Spr.ing Aw.ake.ning with d/Deaf performers, it was entirely new levels of context and meaning added and at least for me it changed how I listened to it and what stood out to me from other performances

tl;dr it was fucking stellar and I need it to tour yesterday

the book was like.... okay.... there’s a lot of valid criticism for it and JSF said he didn’t have an ASD in mind when writing Oskar but Oskar was very clearly autistic-coded and at the very least neurodivergent + a lot of his traits/behaviors stuck out to me reading it as a small teen(TM) because they were real things I have dealt with that do not fit the rhetoric of what ND children are “supposed” to be like

and then the movie adaptation f*cked that up and removed every ~negative~ trait that didn’t fit the aforementioned rhetoric for autistic/ND children (e.g. mood swings, sensory issues, destructive behaviors) and essentially made him a slate for the Angel Autistic Child stereotype. not to mention autistic people weren’t actually consulted and the director spoke with “Asperger’s experts”... oookay...

I wouldn’t go so far as to call it inspiration po.rn but it was definitely molded by and for allistic audiences and my bitter ASD heart hasn’t let it go in 3 years

JD always gets a little bit touchy around anniversaries---his parents’ marriage, his mother’s DEATH, etcetera---and after the “suicides” of Kurt and Ram, Veronica was very distant. When they weren’t arguing, she was avoiding him. It didn’t help, but how was he to explain that? Luckily he had other friends. Temporary friends, most likely, but friends nonetheless. It was more than he could say for a good portion of his other schools. Friends---like Wendla---gave him a distraction, at least.

“Okay.” Jodie had by now found a pen and paper to make communication a little more easy. So she draws out diagrams of two people, one with their arm coming around with arrows pointing toward the other person as if about to grab or punch them. The other has their arms bent and together, arrows suggesting an against force. She taps the page and then motions for her to look up. Pointing to herself she demonstrates the first person, then points at Wendla and demonstrates the second. It had been decided that it would be for the best if she could defend herself. Aiden and Jodie couldn’t be with her all the time.

Aiden had opened the closest door to her, she was being chased and the opening pushed relief through her. Running in she closes the door behind herself and closes her eyes. There’s a moment before the sound of gun shots fill her ears and she can relax. Turning with a sigh Jodie pauses at the sight of someone.

“I’m- I’m not gonna hurt you. I’m here to help.” she squints a little, “Are you okay?”
