"Fairground Stall" 1900 oil on canvas by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) at @metmuseum the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Written near the painting: The "parade" was such a fixture of French culture and art that it is perhaps not surprising that the young Picasso took up the theme of upon his first visit to Paris in 1900, adopting a tried-and-true design. A colorful makeshift stage sets off an Arab dancer in scarlet pantaloons, a proprietor in evening dress, a stout brass player, a white-faced clown, and a burly strong man. The crowd below is more generalized: a rank of dark costumes and caps from which only a few schematic faces emerge, yet evidence enough to spot a blue-clad worker to the left and a top-hatted bourgeois to the right.
