If I didn’t know any better I would say that Mashima himself ships Freed with Laxus.

I mean one thing that during the ball episode Freed wanted to dance with Laxus and he was clearly disappointed when Laxus refused

And he was a little too happy and blushing when he offered to wash his back. 

So I get the vibe that he’s a bit gay for Laxus.
