Was musing on this last week and chatting with friends on discord about it. After this latest episode I had to make a post.

Thjazi ...

Is mischievous, sometimes a hero or a villain depending on who's telling a story about him

Uses shadow magic

Has a fairy companion

Has a romantic, fraught relationship with a lady of noble birth

Has a posh, highborn nemesis who lost a hand, and the nemesis is being stalked/cursed by a harbinger of death

Spent a lot of time amongst a ragtag band of social outcasts, including homeless children

Will never grow up (because he's died in the narrative)

Literally in episode 2, Thimble says to Occtis "you grew up."

Idk if this means anything or is just a fun fact, but hey, it's all stacking up.

Gonna throw out this theory onto tumblr early on just in case.

The root of the reason Julien hates Thjazi so much is that he didn't defeat and bring Thjazi down.

Thjazi let him win.

Thjazi Fang, folk hero, years spent in battle, very successful magical warrior of some sort … taken out by an 18/19 year old hotheaded noble with no backup, no magic (that we know of) and possibly only one arm??? I don't think so. This seems fishy to me!

I was getting "peaked in high school" vibes from Julien this week and wondering why and was like wait a second what if his big grand triumph wasn't true! All that glory feels cheapened and stolen and WRONG and he can't even tell anyone why, and so he just seethes about it!

Reason(s) why Thjazi might have let him win:

1) they needed to end the war and Thjazi thought with himself taken out, it might end things relatively peacefully (which it did!)

2) Thjazi didn't wanna kill this angry teenager so he decided to surrender instead of killing a kid

3) Thjazi knew Julien was a vassal of his wife's house and Thjazi felt he owed her this, after the whole rebellion and putting her in such a difficult situation and all

4) other political machinations / schemes we don't know about yet

5) he thought he was gonna die anyways and doing so by giving this young upstart a leg up in life was as good a death as any
