It’s the most wonderful time of the year…. I can’t stress enough just how much I love Fall! Bring on the pumpkin spice, football, hayrides, pumpkin patches, food and family gatherings!
Last week, I shared with you, pictures of My Fall Front Porch, and this week, I’m sharing some before and after pictures of My Fall Mantel and disclosing all the details of how to balance and adorn your mantelpiece without overdoing it or making it look too cluttered.
I first, took a picture of my mantle and used it as a reference. Then I headed over to Hobby Lobby where they have enough Fall decor to make your head spin and almost completely overwhelm you from the moment you step foot in the door! If you can’t find what your looking for in there, I doubt you’ll find it anywhere!
BEFORE
I followed these 3 steps to create an invisible triangle of movement; tallest point in the center that moves down and out to allow your eyes to easily focus on the details and create a smooth transition rather than a cluttered, unbalanced mess.
Focal Point: Choose a large object that will serve as the focal point of the mantle. In this case, it’s our flat screen tv. The visual weight of this object should balance out the visual weight of the firebox below the mantel and should fill a large portion of the wall above the mantel.
Scale/Anchors: Choose items to place on either side of the focal point that are taller, but still smaller than the overall height of the focal point (the tv). They do not necessarily have to be identical objects, but it’s best to keep them around the same height for visual weight and balance. Allow decorative items to overlap so they feel connected and act as a cohesive unit.
Fillers: Add in additional objects below the focal point that are variable heights yet still smaller than the items on either side of the focal point. Manage visual weight with dissimilar items.
AFTER
I really couldn’t be happier with how it turned out! I love the mix of burn oranges and spice along with the rustic and antique touches of the distressed wooden pumpkins and banner.

Happy Monday everyone! I hope that you all had a lovely weekend. I know that mine was certainly busy. On Saturday I took a 6 hour food preservation and canning class and then we had our neighborhood block party. On Sunday we headed to our community garden and harvested 10lbs of tomatoes!!! Our tomatoes at our community garden plot have gone crazy. It’s a jungle over there. Next I put my newfound…
