Castiel flinched and leaned away, hand coming up to cover the scar marring the side of his throat. It was a jagged bite wound that had healed into a raised white outline in the shape of the vamp’s teeth. “Vampires. There were only suppose to be two. Dean and I had dispatched them but there was a third and he blindsided me. It was shortly after I fell.”

And in that moment, as Dean’s eyes held everything that Castiel had ever wanted and hoped for, he knew he couldn’t let it happen.

If you didn’t have a chance, then I never did.

If he fell now, for Dean, as he had always hoped would be asked of him, there would be no possible way to win this war. He saw those words, saw the way those green eyes begged him, Stay, and he closed his eyes as pain surged through his vessel, the words falling from his lips, “No.”

And he was gone.
