How To False Cord Scream Guaranteed!
A false chord scream… One of the most prolific screams in death metal, death core, metalcore, and many other genres. It is the low, often gurgly type of scream and is based, as its name suggests, on the false cords or vestibular folds that sit on top of your regular vocal cords. Step 1, just like all the other videos, drink some water. Lubricate your throat because this is one of the more difficult screams on your throat, it shouldn’t hurt, but it might wear your voice out quick if you’re not careful. Let’s explore a few ways to get you on the path of a false cord scream. Relax first, hum a song with your eyes closed and completely relaxing your face. Both Singing and screaming benefit from the relaxation of most parts of the body and activating portions of your body intentionally in isolation, such as the diaphragm and the soft palate. Now that you’ve done that, it’s time for the technique. The first one we’re going to try is the heavy ass sigh. So get this, you’re on the toilet, tensing your stomach to take a fat dump, you get a phonecall from the bank telling you that they just cancelled your credit card because you’re bad at paying things. You’re probably a musician and don’t make any money just like me. (subscribe to my patreon to change that). What sound are you probably going to make? FUCK. but that’s not what we’re looking for unless you’re into deathgrips. We want that “tired of life please end me” sigh.
You should get a similar sound. That slow rattling is your false cords vibrating, congratulations. You just used your false cords. All that is left to do is support it with breath and you will have a basic false cord mid scream. For lows, you just need to make your mouth a butthole. For gutturals, play with the position of your tongue. For highs, there are two types but as with other screams, the position of your mouth is important, open your mouth wide and you will get a not very high high scream. I will teach you a way of getting it much higher in a later video.If you’re still with me here and you haven’t gotten the sound down quite yet, try this one. It is substantially more dangerous so be careful and if it hurts, don’t do it again. Try to bark like a big ass dog. Not a chihuahua but like, an irish wolfhound or some shit. This sound will also activate your false cords. Again, once you have that distortion, you should be able to add breath support through your diaphragm and drag out the sound for a basic false cord scream.
