Expansive contemporary sounds from Russia

Last spring I began exchanging messages with a contemporary music label called Fancy Music in Russia, after being directed to the project by a Montréal-based musician / composer named Daniel Áñez. After exchanging some notes with Sergey Krasin, the founder of the label in Russia, we arranged to swap some music releases by post, in exchange I sent over родина, a piano / oud duet album that I worked on with musician / composer Sam Shalabi.

Around a month later I got a package in the mail from Moscow with three albums from Fancy Music, all with beautiful, minimalist design. In an effort to spread the word about this thoughtful contemporary label in Russia and also explore more deeply the releases myself, below are some reflections on the three albums.

Structure # 54, is a quartet recording led by Alexey Kruglov, playing alto/soprano saxophone, in addition to basset horn and recorder. Joining Alexey on the project is Roman Stolyar, on both recorders and keyboards, Vladimir Dranitsa on double bass and Sergey Belichenko on drums / percussion. This record certainly falls within the contemporary jazz universe, including elements of free improvisation, sonic exchanges that expand into a musical zone that feels contemplative and spacious.

Recorded in Novosibirsk, Russia's third city, located in southwestern Siberia, most certainly you can hear winter both in and between the notes on the record, the silences speak of cold winds.

Kruglov explains the project well in the album’s liner notes, saying “the world with its immense space, bringing up the image of infinity in each Siberian soul,” continuing to say that, “improvisational school of Siberia and Novosibirsk in particular, is absolutely different to that of any other part of Russia — musicians are in constant research, they stay away from cliches and therefore keep their natural frankness. Due to an uncomplicated call to the heart of the creative process, Siberian musicians, always opened to something new, establish a new language, their own style, own sounding.”

Play.List, an album by classical composer Boris Filanovsky, brings us to a different contemporary musical zone. Involving fifteen musicians and two singers, the album is dramatic, tense and striking, most certainly a window into current classical music in Russia. Often Russian classical music is defined by renowned composers from generations past, but very rarely do we hear about contemporary and alternative orchestral compositions.

Recorded at the Platforma Project, an important cultural space in Moscow, the recording works with space and discord, while conveying an forceful sense of urgency. Filanovsky writes in the liner notes that “there is no syntax here, to the extent that there can be no syntax. Nor is there syntax in Endless Melody — but because of an almost total, uninterrupted coherence. The result is a composition of flickering identity.”

Post Production by composer, pianist Anton Batagov, is certainly a record that I connect to immediately as a fellow piano player. The recordings are tight and clean, but expensive and daydream inducing at the sametime. Batagov is a celebrated contemporary pianist in Russia and this album clearly indicates without needing many words the reasons for that.

The album title refers to the context for the sounds, all created for films and television. Batagov writes, “post production is the stage in making movies, television shows and other sorts of audiovisual ‘productions’ in which music, special effects, and various other ‘miracles’ are added to the picture. The music you hear on this CD was written for films and television. It formed part of the story, part of life on screen. Someone made love or killed someone to accompaniment of this music. Somebody did something; someone walked, drove, or flew somewhere; someone talked, laughed or suffered … The mood was lighthearted or sad. Everything was just like in a movie.”

A beautiful track on this album to my ears is “Weather forecast,” a piece that was originally written to accompany the weather forecast on NTV channel in Russia. My mind wanders while listening, imagining the weather patterns of the vast lands of Russia, you can listen at:

Fancy Music is most certainly a fascinating portal into contemporary music in Russia, sounds spanning contemporary jazz to modern classic, the tone is precise and clear, while also expansive and dream provoking.
