Character A, the archetypal Popular Girl, finds herself sharing a dorm room with Character B, a shy, awkward loner much more interested in books than people. A thinks B is a judgmental snob who thinks she's above everyone else because she's smart. B thinks A is vapid, superficial, and using her looks to get everything she wants.

Character C is A's best friend, and (for reasons A can't even begin to understand) has a crush on B. Because she loves C, she agrees to help them win over B. But as she starts spending more and more time with B to gather information for C to use in their quest to woo B, A finds herself developing a crush of her own.

As any good friend would, A tucks her own feelings away and focuses on helping C get the girl. What A doesn't know, however, is that all that time spent together has made B catch feelings... and they're very much not for C.

Alternate flavor:

B catches feelings for C... and also for A. She doesn't know how to choose, but it turns out A and C have secretly wanted each other for a long time, and they're more than happy to share.

Character A and Character B meet over the summer and have one of those sweet, passionate summer flings that ends as soon as it's time for each of them to go back to their regular lives. Sure, they could keep in touch, but they're both busy people with busy college lives, and deep down they know it's best to leave things as they are and cherish the memory of their short time together.

A has extra reason to want to focus on her school work this year: she's doing an exchange program with a different college, and she wants to impress her new professors. What she's absolutely not expecting is to run into B the second she walks into her first class.

Tell me more, tell me more: much like Danny Zuko, B has a bit of a reputation on campus, and it doesn't match the B that A got to know over the summer. Which one is the real B? And will A still feel the same after finding out? [ OR: the Grease reboot ]

What happens at the beach stays at the beach: A is heartbroken to find out B is in a relationship when they meet again. She's even more heartbroken (and, let's face it, pissed off) when she finds out this is a very long term relationship, which makes A the other woman. What A doesn't know is B and her boyfriend are just best friends who have been pretend dating since high school to cover in front of their very homophobic families.

You have a what?: though B is thrilled to see A again and their summery feelings still exist during the fall, B doesn't seem to be interested in picking up where they left off over the summer or even to try and see where their feelings lead them. B lives off campus and always seems in a rush to leave after classes, and A is starting to think B is hiding something. As it turns out, A is right: B has a son/daughter, and after spending the summer break with their father they're now back home with B.

Character A is not religious. She’s... let’s call it spiritual. She’s into the healing powers of crystals and herbs, she loves a good natural remedy, and she unironically thanks Mother Earth whenever she feels amazed by nature. Which is, to be perfectly honest, nearly every day. She’s generally a happy and laid-back person, but she has one big pet peeve: people who think she’s dumb because of what she believes. A is starting law school, thank you very much, and that has nothing to do with the clear quartz under her pillow.

Or maybe it does. It’s supposed to help with concentration!

Character B has just moved to a new city to start med school and make her childhood dream of becoming a doctor a reality. B is a woman of science: she likes facts and evidence and things that make sense. So when she meets her new roommate and her essential oil diffuser (lavender, for a calm introduction!), B is pretty sure her living situation could not possibly be any worse.

But it does get worse. First, there’s the fact that A‘s social life is as busy as her incense holder, so natural hermit B has to deal with a never-ending parade of people in her apartment wanting to make small talk. Then, there’s the discovery that there’s one thing that’s much worse than A: A in a relationship. And last, but certainly not least, the most chilling realization of all:

B is falling in love with A.

A isn’t just into crystals and herbs: she’s an actual witch with magic powers, and if she must levitate B’s biochemistry book to prove it, she will.

B may be a woman of science, but that’s not the reason she’s so exasperated by A’s essential oils. It’s just that she comes from a long line of healing witches, and she’s sick of the appropriation.

Character A is a teacher. Actually, she's A Teacher, capitalized, written in perfectly formed cursive and possibly adorned with a tiny apple sticker next to it. A was born to be a teacher. She grew up dreaming of the day she'd get to teach her own class of elementary students, she loved every second of her education, and she's now thoroughly in love with her job. And her students love her right back. Miss A is still too young for any of her students to be all grown up, but everyone assumes she's the kind of teacher most of them will remember all through their adult lives. She's living her dream.

Character B is... a free spirit. She's never been interested in rules or the ways society is supposed to function, and her only goal in life is to be free, have fun, and go on a road trip from Alaska to Argentina on her beloved motorbike. Is that even possible? She'll find out when she gets there. If she gets there, as it turns out, because one day she gets a call telling her there's been a terrible accident and her sister and brother-in-law are gone, and for some unthinkable reason, they named her as her niece's guardian.

What. The. Hell.

Overnight, B acquires a seven-year-old girl and a whole world of responsibilities she's not even sure she wants to take on. But that's not the kid's fault, right? So B moves from her 'grunge chic' city apartment to her sister's beige suburban house, leaves her bike in the garage so she can drive her niece to school in a sensible hybrid car, and considers the fact that she's gonna have to get an actual steady job and not just do odd jobs and street art for tips.

And as if that wasn't enough, she's supposed to volunteer in her niece's classroom for the week, because this is apparently one of those schools. At least Miss A seems nice. Silver linings, right?

A and B hit it off right away. They become fast friends and sparks are very obviously flying, so after a while they finally decide to go on an actual date... and that's exactly when B's long term on-again off-again girlfriend shows up.

A and B do hit it up right away and become fast friends with sparks included, but sadly they're not the only ones. The resident Golden Bachelor, ex-professional sportsman PE teacher, has been having a sparkly friendship with Miss A for the last couple of years, and he's not about to give it up.

Character A works as a bartender in a college town. It's not her dream job, but it pays the bills and the hours allow her to go to class, so she feels like she can't really ask for more. She just has to keep going until she gets her shiny degree and she can hopefully get her first job in her dream career.

For the last couple of weeks, A has noticed a newcomer around the bar. Character B is charming, flirty, and a generous tipper. She seems to be in her element surrounded by beautiful women, and A would be lying if she said she hasn't noticed B left the bar with a different companion every night.

A isn't judging, by the way. Merely making an observation.

One night, A closes the bar and finds B right outside, uncharacteristically alone and not exactly sober. A lives right across the street, so she offers B a place to crash for the night, and B begrudgingly accepts.

A wakes up the next morning to a thank you breakfast and a side of B she'd never seen at the bar. Sparks fly between perfectly golden toast and lively conversation, and before either of them can fully wrap their head around what's happening, they find themselves in A's bed.

When B doesn't show up at the bar that night or the night after that, A breathes a sigh of relief: she's promised herself to stay away from romance and drama until she graduates, and the last thing she wants is to be yet another name on B's list of conquests.

What A wasn't expecting was to walk into her first class of the semester and find B sitting right there.

Although they both try to pretend the other doesn't exist, fate gets in the way and they find themselves paired up for a project that will have them worked in close quarters for the rest of the semester.

B isn't just in A's class... she's teaching it. Turns out B is the newest TA in the department, and A can't drop the class if she wants to graduate in time.

Character A is the captain of the swim team. She's strong, she's fast, and she's determined to succeed. Though nobody would call her dumb, academics are definitely not her main focus, and she'd much rather see her grades slip than be second best in the pool. Though her status as the star athlete on campus could open many social doors for her, she doesn't have time for that: she's here to train, work her ass off, and win.

Character B has her eye on one of the most competitive grad schools in the country, and she's not about to let the so-called "college experience" jeopardize her chances of getting in. B knows her academic brilliance won't be enough to make her dream come true, but she has the perfect plan: she's almost completely sure she's made a serious scientific breakthrough during her many hours in the lab, and her professor is willing to help her publish a paper that'd guarantee her a spot in her dream school.

All B needs is her brain, her determination, and a bunch of different samples from the ocean. Which is only 15 minutes from campus, so it should be easy, right?

Except B doesn't know how to swim. Naturally, human/fish hybrid A is the first name that pops into B's head when thinking of someone to help. And normally, A would refuse any kind of offer that would involve wasting time she could've spent training... but there are a couple science-related classes that are kicking her ass, and everyone knows B is the apple of the science department's eye.

A and B dated a while back. Awkward. Turns out their relationship wasn't quite as done as they thought it was.

A and B really don't get along at first, so it's more a reluctant symbiotic relationship than a true collaboration. They go from enemies (to friends) to lovers.

A and B get along, but it's one of those platonic friendships where neither of them can see the other as a romantic partner at all... until they do.

Character A is a well-respected teacher in a prestigious private school. She’s in love with teaching and with her subject, and though she has a reputation for being strict, her students generally appreciate her. With the current principal just months away from retirement, everyone in the school is convinced A will be their successor. After all, A perfectly embodies the very conservative, strait-laced spirit of their institution, and she has the spotless personal and professional records to show for it.

Character B is a young teacher with just enough experience under her belt to feel ready tackling something a bit more challenging than what she’s been working on so far. After several rejections, she’s thrilled to find out she’ll be working at the private school of her dreams. Sure, it’s a bit more old-fashioned than she’d like. And sure, she’d be absolutely fired on the spot if they found out she’s into women... but the opportunity is amazing enough to make B willing to keep that little tidbit under lock and key for a school year or two.

Of course, she wasn’t planning on immediately falling for A, the soon-to-be principal and resident hard-ass. Life’s what happens when we’re busy making plans, right?

A is not playing a part: she really is as conservative and old-fashioned as she seems. She’s also (of course!) straight... or so she thinks.

A is playing a part, just like B. She’s known she loves women for a while, but she’s kept it under wraps for the sake of her career.

B is not playing a part (A may or may not be). She may even be a graduate of the school, raised in its values for all her life.
