Just an Opinion
This, is going to sound a little strange at first, but let me explain before you judge. I liked that Julia was denied magic and went into depression in The Magicians.
As a huge fan of both the books and the show, I often ponder over the lives of the characters. One of my favourite parts of the whole trilogy is Julia’s time in the safe-house scene, and then at The House at Murs.
I loved those chapters and episodes partly because they brought magic into the real world, making it feel tangible and possible, more so for the development it puts Julia through.
It’s more evident in the show, but even in the books, Julia is sort of dismissive of Quentin and his dreams of magic and Fillory, not understanding that those are the only things giving his life meaning.
Her knowing about magic but not being able to have it, then going into a Q-like depression as he gets everything he ever dreamed of, was beautiful poetic justice.
