As someone who is in a fair amount of fandoms, I never really pay attention to the people who say a fandom is stupid or others shouldn’t be a part of a fandom. But recently, I have let myself look at some of the comments that these people make. I wasn’t pleased with my findings...
It’s heartbreaking. It really is heartbreaking to see so many hateful words directed towards fans and fandoms. Why can’t people realize that different people like different things? Like, I am actually having a hard time understanding this. If something is not directly affecting your life in any significant way, then just ignore it! Don’t focus on what other people are doing, especially if it’s something as small as liking a particular band, tv show, movie, etc. Mind your own business because you should be worried about you and you only.
People’s negative comments are a waste of space. They don’t contribute to anything. Nobody gains anything from it. If you are not giving out any helpful advice or giving any constructive criticism, then those negative comments are just there to make you look like a complete and utter jerk who has nothing better to do than make people feel bad about something they shouldn’t feel bad about in the first place.
This does not mean that you have to force yourself to like a certain thing. That is quite the opposite. But what you should do, is have respect. Try to understand where a person is coming from instead of just shutting them down all together.
This goes for people who are in a fandom and say negative things to the people who are not a fan of what they like as well. People are allowed to like and dislike what they want. Like I said before, if these factors do not affect you in any way, don’t worry about it. If something gets out of hand, the right people will speak about it and settle it in the best and peaceful way possible.
And as for the people who say hurtful things just for the sake of it... Don’t you have better things to do? Last time I checked, hopping onto bandwagons are not a profession. You don’t get paid for it. I just can’t comprehend why someone would want to make negative comments for no reason or purpose. Just think, if you can get noticed like that on social media for negative comments, then you can just as easily get attention through positive ones! You can make an impact!
Please, don’t hate people because of what they like and don’t like. And if you feel like you can’t handle talking to people in a certain fandom without it getting out of control, then just ignore it. It’s as simple as that.
Thanks for spending the time to read this! Sometimes, you just gotta rant! :)
Remember, spread positivity and respect to wherever you go and to whoever you meet! \(0v0)/
