Before you yell animal abuse to owners of “morbidly obese” hamsters, consider these images - each pair taken on the same day.  I am creating this post because the second photograph in the set above (all of which are by flickr user pyza* by the way) got a lot of negative feedback - people crying out that it was animal abuse to let your pet get so fat.  I know this was all a long time ago but I still see comments like those made of other hamster images and it really gets my goat, because the image that caused all the uproar (the second one) was taken on the same day as the very top (first) image.  And each image in the righthand column was taken on the same day as the corresponding image in the lefthand column.  This hamster was NOT morbidly obese.  Hamsters in general have loose skin (as a defense mechanism so that if a predator bites their skin they can turn around underneath the skin until they are facing the predatory and can bite back to get the predator to let go so they can run away).  Hamsters can curl themselves into balls, relax themselves into pancakes, scrunch up or huddle or laze.  Or they can stand up or stretch out.  In general if a hamster is lying on its back it will look much fatter than if it is standing.  Photos can be deceptive.  Instead of immediately criticizing a hamster owner for having a chubby-looking hammy, maybe send a message of concern and ask if they weigh their hamster.  Ask, don’t denounce.
