KnB 30-day challenge
20. Favourite Ability
First hard question?
Honestly, I'm not that interested in the technical side of these characters' abilities because... there's not that much of it? Even though it happens to be packaged in a high school format, KnB is essentially a fantasy story with a soft magic system. For me to really get interested in that stuff it needs to be at least Mistborn level of detail.
I'm into watching/reading KnB because of the games and the suspense, and I'm into writing for it because of the characters and the relationships, so I honestly haven't given this a second thought. Even in my fics when I introduce new abilities their function is mostly symbolic and supposed to say stuff about the characters and their relationships, so I'm not really interested in exploring them in technical detail in my writing either.
But.....
Maybe it's Emperor Eye? Okay, this kind of goes against what I just said because it's probably the least explained ability. But maybe that is the reason in this case after all? Because the other abilities in my view are explained to a satisfactory but not an intriguing level. So they are a bit of "yeah yeah whatever" to me. They're just not that stimulating to think about because how the abilities work is not the main concern of the story and that's why they are only explained to a level that supports the plot, which is the games, which are the interesting part.
However, Emperor Eye was not explained to a satisfactory level for me. Which leaves a lot of room for interpretation. So, I guess if you go enough to the other direction, if you go vague enough, then it's stimulating again? Because I feel like I have a more seemless opportunity to bring this ability down to earth in my writing than I do with, let's say Midorima's three pointers, since they are very literal and defined. It may seem paradoxical when it's something as outlandish as Akashi's abilities but... Well, I don't need to explain to KnB fans how illusions and magic tricks work. So in Akashi's case it's stimulating for me to work out the logic behind it myself to a satisfactory degree that supports my story, because that wasn't there in the original. In the case of the others the level of detail that supports the story is already there so why bother? My interest is kind of controlled by what the story needs, I guess. If it doesn't need something to work, I'm not that interested in pure technical details.
