her words freeze the time around him—and for a couple of seconds all he can do is stare at her and blink; sinking in the feeling that starts gleaming in his claret eyes. a wonder. his smile grows broad and blissful and free of what has happened to him until now. every little episode in his story that could have made him think otherwise.

“ AH! ubuyashiki-san truly is that kind! thank you so much! “ the kid exclaims before turning to the sky; quiet. the burning colors of a day gone by. “ i… honestly, i don’t know if there’s something i want more than that. other than... making sure nezuko goes back to who she was, of course! but—in ten years, OR EVEN MORE! in twenty, THIRTY years from now, i still want to feel this happy about the friends and ALL the things i’ve seen and learned in these last months. hopefully—while still having them around me, that is! “ 

and as his dream fades into the air, tanjiro thinks of his family and what’d they say if they heard him now. would they approve? how proud they’d be of him? if anything, wherever they were, he hoped they were smiling right now. peacefully.

The young boy stared up, wide-eyed and slightly suspicious at her presence. He didn’t remember how he came to be here, wherever here was, and he certainly didn’t remember her face. Sanemi looked at his empty hands and wondered where Genya was, or anyone else. He didn’t go into the town without one or more of his siblings in tow often. 

Oh, the bliss of being unaware, the short memory of a blood demon art that twisted and bent his form on the fringes of his mind unaccessible to him yet. Sanemi will surely scream, thrash and drown in his anger when the truth comes back to him, but for now, small hands seek to grasp what his heart wishes to lead him to.

A warm day had given way to a cool evening. Layers of fabric kept them warm against the breeze sweeping down from the mountain. It wasn’t often the demon walked so near to the road, but they found themself there while following the ambling chase of two young foxes. As a precaution, their tails and ears were hidden from sight though their presence still brushed aside twigs and leaves. 

Something drew the foxes’ attentions, pausing their playful yips and rustlings. Aoiyasu paused as well. They listened to the air in the trees only to breathe deep and nearly cough. A hand moved to cover the disgusted twist of their face.

They remembered loving flowers. Lounging in fields in bloom and waking up to the fading smell of flowers folded between sheets. But there were some that they no longer enjoyed. The morning glories as they opened to the sun, and the heavy boughs of wisteria that made their gut churn. There was no wisteria on the mountain. Well over 400 years and never once had they found any. Yet the faint scent of it found them now. 

Curiosity got the better of them, and bare feet lead them towards the road. Their ears caught what their sense of smell missed. A lone traveler with the quiet shift of several layers just hiding the familiar tap of a sheath and sword. A slayer. Fur rose at the realization but they forced themself to calm. The disguise was still in tact, and they had no reason to assume a demon lurked in the woods. Still, they wanted information.

“Out so late on your own?” They asked, stepping casually from among the trees with a friendly smile, “You still have a ways until the village.”

❝ YOUKO-SAN! YOUKO-SAN! I can climb to the highest branch to get the apples that touch the sky! Watch this! ❞ Kyōjurō, with his apple sack tied tightly around his middle, grabs ahold of the tree trunk like a bear and begins to hoist himself up the sturdy truck. He’s shorter for his age, so the tree can bear his weight, and he doesn’t think twice about breaking his mold. 

It is silly, it is childish, to indulge in such an act, but...Kyōjurō is a child. Sometimes, he forgets it himself, being the one to care for the Rengoku house and raise his little brother all by himself while he tiptoes around their father, so deep in his liquor and grief that the boy doesn’t think he will ever climb out again. He misses his dad, the man who would come home with a bright smile and pick him up in a tight hug, who would train with him and Senjurō until sunset and Ruka called them inside to eat together. He misses his mother, her words to him his driving motivation for everything he does. Life for the young boy was difficult, but he bore it with a strong face and a smile, because that is the kind of person he wanted to be. He had to, for Senjurō. 

But. 

Sometimes, when Youko came to visit, with her soft aura and calming voice, Kyōjurō could let go and be a child again. These days were rare for him, but something about it recharged his heart in a way he didn’t know he needed. 

Calloused hands, rough from hours upon hours of swordsmanship practice, gifted him ease of climbing. Reaching the tall parts of the apple tree was a breeze. Kyōjurō cautiously reached for the highest apple he could, snapping it away from the branch before looking back down at Youko with a grin. ❝ SEE! This one will be the sweetest apple! ❞

adamant gaze refuses to take a distance from the sight beyond his window. he is thinking, or—less than that, maybe only traveling over the different shapes that such a long journey can offer, fixing on the way the trees turn to nothing turn to mountains he has never seen from up close; never wanted to either. and—while her company in the cabin is not entirely undesired ( if anything, concerning. less to do with what she can do and more with who she is related to, if that offered some understanding on the situation ) sanemi can’t entirely distance himself from what she said and everything that that implied. he is not more positive about it either, not with the reports that they received concerning the threat that their target represents. still—

“ there’s always that, isn’t it? “. not a lot more of emotion or remorse attached to his words. not absolutely happy about it either, it was just how things worked for them. and yet—there’s something that doesn’t feel good about this, something... that doesn’t quite fit in how he understands their positions. he turns, crossed arms over his chest and a visible frown that always seemed to be there. a pause. “ which makes me wonder—why send you if that would be the case? “ and he means it—when he refers to himself as something that could be replaced ( lay his life for a cause he deeply believes in, he wouldn’t mind that to be honest ), and even more, when he thinks of her as something too important to be risked.

someone whose life he wouldn’t have put on the line, if he had had a say on the matter.

     Too late for that. The diminutive slayer was already practically trembling with dread. What foreboding! How could she possibly stay calm when the Lady Ubuyashiki greets her with this prerequisite?

     Pulling herself up hastily from her bow, her eyes go wide behind the thick lenses of her glasses. Hands cupping both sides of her face as a bemoaning sound clambers up from her throat.

     “Oh no, something terrible has happened, hasn’t it? Are you hurt, is someone hurt?” She rambles on, hardly taking a second to catch her breath between thoughts.

The demon they just fought, one that promised a rather challenging fight, disappeared into ash as Yuuji stands back up. He rubs his face of blood, the demon had gotten him with one of it’s attacks, but he was able to get close enough to disarm it while Youko gave the finishing blow. He huffs, inserting the fiery red blade back into the sheath on his hip. 

❝     Tired?     ❞     He gives a cheeky grin.     ❝     I’m alright! Come on, let’s go help those who were injured by this demon.     ❞
