penny wheeler ↳ lullabies

Once upon a time, Penny Wheeler had been a member of the Titans. A proud member. Finally stepping out from underneath the Black Canary’s wing and proving that Starling was good enough without her mentor. That she was a hero in her own right.

Those times with the Titans had been some of the best in her life. It was where she met her best friend, Dawn Granger. It was where she had met the love of her life, Hank Hall. They had all been a family to one another.

Until they weren’t.

Losing the Titans, her best friend, and her boyfriend in one fell swoop almost broke Penny. It took years of therapy and compartmentalizing but eventually she managed a degree of ‘normal’. Not exactly happy, but no longer crying in the bathtub listening to Taylor Swift. Finding work as a detective in Chicago, Penny tried to exact justice on the right side of the law for a change. And for a while it worked.

And then Dick Grayson decides to drag her back into it with only two text messages:

I’m apologizing in advance.

“Hello,” Kay called softly, stepping in through the window. Jason’s bedroom was somewhat bright, but still left a lot unseen. Once she gathered he wasn’t there, she took a few steps to the desk. On top their was two books, a plain grey chemistry textbook and a copy of Romeo and Juliet, both soft covers.

“See something you didn’t expect?” Jason asked, materializing from somewhere else, and wrapping his arms around her waist.

“I wouldn’t have expected the science book or the love story,” Kay admitted, skimming her hand along both covers. The chemistry book was new, the publishing date only a year ago and the plastic it was wrapped in still under it, while the romeo and juliet copy was worn, almost falling apart.

“I can have niche interests,” he said, leaning his head against her shoulder. Turning to the side he added “Also, it’s a tragedy, not a love story,”

“Romeo and Juliet isn’t a tragedy because it doesn’t tell you before hand it’s a tragedy,” Kay corrected, ignoring the feeling of his breathe on her neck.

“It literally starts with people arguing, right after laying the scene in a war of two houses! How is that not a tragedy to you!” he didn’t move as he said it, but he shifted a bit.

“That doesn’t make it a tragedy, we’re arguing right now, in a war on crime, are we a tragedy?” Kay had meant it as a teasing remark, but it came out heavy as an anchor.

“Nope, we’re gonna have a happy ending,” Jason said immediately, his arms tightening.

The only thing she could do from her position was hold onto his arms, so that’s what she did when she asked “Promise?”

“I promise,” he whispered into her neck, sealing it with a kiss.
