The prologue room at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial now features a new interpretive aid for sight-impaired visitors: a newly-installed miniature version of Robert Graham’s sculpture of FDR seated in a wheelchair. FDR, who suffered from poliomyelitis, used a wheelchair when he wasn’t being photographed by the news media. He was concerned that his political opponents would use images of him in a wheelchair to paint him as unfit for the rigors and demands of being president. The wheelchair depicted in this sculpture is one of several built to FDR’s specifications. He had workers cut the legs off of an ordinary wooden chair and mount it to a custom-designed chassis. One of Roosevelt’s wheelchairs is on display inside the bookshop at the FDR memorial.
