ash. nina could taste the ash. she felt it creep through the cavern of her mouth, snaking its way down to her lungs, slowly poisoning her body. she wasn’t a heartrender, not anymore, but she knew the decay of her own body in an intimate way. flames. nina saw them, a witness to their dominion over the slat. decades of history, erased. perhaps permanently. kaz’s empire was burning to the ground - and she was powerless to stop it.
eyes scanning the horizon, surveying the damage, she narrowed in on two figures on the top floor, frantically waving, screams silent among the chaos. they were in the middle of an inferno. she could almost feel death, slowly closing the trap. for the first time in her life, nina wished she was a summoner. if the power of the elements were at her disposal...what use was she here? who needs more death in a living graveyard?
searching for someone - anyone - better suited for the task at hand, she spotted saran; a needle in a haystack. her first impulse wasn’t to shield the inferni from the ambassador’s grip, or even sweep her up to safety. saran was a grisha. and what did grisha do? they served.
“saran!” voice drowned out by the battles around them, nina grabbed saran’s hand, guiding her closer to the building. “i need your help.”
