Trump Administration Admits Politics Influenced Energy Grant Cancellations
The Trump administration has acknowledged in federal court that hundreds of Department of Energy grants were selected for cancellation based on the political identity of the states where the projects were located.
According to court filings, 283 grants connected to states that voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election were included in an October 2025 termination round. Meanwhile, approximately 340 comparable grants in states that supported Donald Trump, or had Republican Senate representation, were left untouched.
The Department of Energy admitted that the distinction was not based on project performance, cost savings or legal requirements. Political geography was the determining factor.
The controversy has raised major constitutional questions about whether federal funding can be used to favor supportive states and disadvantage states that voted for the president’s opponent.
The case remains unresolved, but the admission could have wider consequences for presidential power, federal spending and equal treatment under the law.
