Soooo... I grew up fundamentalist christian and was completely in support of banning abortions for a good portion of my life. For context: in 3rd grade I had to write about what I would do if I were president and my biggest “point” (as much as a 3rd grader can have a point) was that I would make abortion completely illegal.
So I just really want to give some perspective which is that as much as the idea of banning abortion is about control for most of the masses out there who are christian and are pro abortion bans it is not some well thought out plot it literally is that these people think it is murder.
Saying “banning abortion only stops safe abortions” doesn’t matter to them because they hear “banning murder only stops murder that protects the murderer”
Saying ‘well if we improved these social structures that lead to abortion is would wildly reduce the amount of abortions” doesn’t matter to them because they hear “murder should be legal but we should change the social structures that make people want to murder so there’s less murder”
They don’t want less abortions and they don’t want safe abortions because to them abortion is murder.
Stop pretending your enemy is sitting, rubbing their hands together, plotting how to control women better. We are not going to solve this problem if we don’t understand how they think. For the vast vast VAST majority of them they oppose abortion because they think it is murder, does it ultimately come down to patriarchal views of women’s body as property and only existing to make babies? Yes, of course. But their conscious thought it that abortion is murder and that is what we must deal with. That is the ground we must meet them on. There’s a saying in law: “you take your victim as you find them” and I truly feel many of you aren’t doing that.
We Must convince them that abortion is Not murder before we can deal with their underlying beliefs. Because if you don’t convince them abortion isn’t murder then even if you pick apart and change their underlying beliefs they’ll still want to ban abortion because it’s murder.
