Snow Day
Soo Winter is well and truly here in Asturias. The snow ploughs are out in force and it has snowed a few times in the cities and a lot more in the mountains. On the coast it just gets really cold and instead of snow we get hail and lots of sleet. One thursday I headed inland with a young teacher from school; Inez, her partner Miguel and their daughter Julia. We drove bout half an hour inland towards the mountains and ski resorts, we drove until the road ended because there was too much snow. Then we jumped out the car. Felachosa is a small town and it was completely buried, doors, tables, cars, everything was covered, blocked by snow. At least a metre and a half of snow, a lot of it fresh powder, which I worked out when I tried to walk and fell straight through. I even tried to make a snow angel but i kinda got stuck, i sank so much that I couldn't get out without wrecking it... oh well next time. We wandered down the partly cleared road, throwing snowballs at each other and then I started making a snow man (had a sneaky carrot in my pocket for the nose). It's actually heaps harder than it looks to pack the loose snow and then roll the ball and keep patting it down. Knee deep I rolled and rolled and rolled and finally i had a nice big ball of snow. The only problem was that it was too heavy for me to lift! Miguel to the rescue. We eventually gave the snowman a body and head and then I went looking for arms from a nearby tree. I struggled through the snow, falling over every second step and finally found some solid ground. Reaching, stretching for a thin branch when I slipped, and fell into a heap. Apparently the solid ground was actually a bench, the only bench in hundreds of metres and I found it and fell off. Slippy strikes again... Sticks for arms, leaves for eyes and Olaf was built. Then the snow really started to come down, so much that the road started to disappeared and it was time to head back. The best day!
