How do you feel about giving up Lyles for the AA guy we got today? And the Vazquez/Dodgers prospects rumors?

Cody Ponce? I've speculated in the past that our front office doesn't look for talent so much as height, and Ponce is 6'6", sooo~

Jokes aside, I suppose I'm glad we got anyone for Lyles. Poor guy just wasn't working out. Cody Ponce hasn't quite lived up to his "top prospect" expectations - 25 years old is getting a bit long in the tooth to be in double-a - but as I understand it, he's having a great season so far. So, Ponce could mature into a good bullpen piece, or he could stay a journeyman in the minors and support other young players, or he could sweeten the pot as a trade piece... Or he could make like Lyles and not work out. Whatever happens, I'm glad we picked Ponce up, because Lyles didn't feel like a strong candidate to me. (And who knows, maybe a change of scenery or the Right Coach in Milwaukee will turn him around! I certainly wouldn't grudge him his future success.)

As for Vazquez:

ugh.

But more to the point, it's a bad look that NH would trade him after vowing to keep him. (Especially considering a lot of fans have felt outright betrayed by the front office for a couple years now - although that mistrust falls mainly on our stingy ownership). And there's a lot of love for Vazquez! He's easily one of our best players. He's a reliable closer. Hell, he filled Mark Melancon's tremendous shoes without a single misstep. And he's so likable! The Nightmare: Pittsburgh's own trickster god, striking terror into our foes' hearts with missiles from a pitching mound which might as well be a mountain under his cleats.

Ironically, I like to cite Vazquez as a fine example of NH's tremendous negotiating skills. So I know that we'll part with him for someone just as good or better; or else not at all. I'm not afraid of losing him for a song. But of course, should we trade him, I'll hate to see him go.
