When Charlotte “Lottie” Dod (24 September 1871 – 27 June 1960) played in the 1887 Wimbledon Championships at the age of 15, Dod bled from wearing a metal-and-whalebone corset that punctured her skin. She defeated five other competitors to become the youngest ladies’ singles champion, a record she holds to this day.
Though best known for tennis, Dod was a multi-sport athlete. Dod won the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship, played for the England women's national field hockey team, and won a silver medal in archery at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Her siblings were also talented athletes, and Dod played doubles tennis with her sister, Annie, and her brother, Tony.
Dod attended the Wimbledon Championships until well into her late eighties. In fact, Dod passed away at the age of 88 while listening to the Wimbledon radio broadcast. – summarized from Wikipedia.
