This chanced meeting in the same village is the closest they have gotten to them so far, a danger that has gotten way too close to them, so Adala quickly finishes up her hunt and rushes back to warn Yotsuyu. The older girl knows immediately just from the look on Adala’s face that something is wrong when she barges into their room without warning.
Yotsuyu pauses in the middle of patching up one of Adala’s hakamas that she has been wearing during this journey and looks up to meet her eyes. “Is it—"
“Yes. Traffickers have arrived in the village. Furukawa’s paid men, probably. We should slip away while they are distracted by the locals.”
Without any more words Yotsuyu immediately stuff their belongings back into their traveling sacks, as Adala settles their room payment and prepares for travel. Once Suzune has been saddled up, she fetches Yotsuyu and their cargo, and they slip out of the village by blending with a group of travelers that came by from Kugane.
Their flashy horses and expensive cargo take most of the slavers’ attention as they stay away at a distance, not wanting to start trouble with these rich merchants, so Adala is able to get them out of the village without much fanfare.

“No, no, you do not need to.” Adala tries to refuse.
That lacquer box and the sigil tell her enough that this is from one of the more expensive stores in town. It’s way too much in return for some paltry hunting meat. But Yotsuyu gives her a particularly stubborn look, and pushes the box closer towards Adala the more she tries to refuse.
It…is rather funny. Adala is far stronger than this girl is, so if they continue pushing this thing between them, she would win this without much effort on her end.
But Yotsuyu is looking so adamant about getting Adala to accept, so after a while of pushing, Adala does so with much amusement.

“Look at me, Gesi, everyone my age has been around ever since the Empire stepped foot on our soils. We learn’ quickly that getting between them means bad news. Ya know the best thing to do? Just let ‘em do what they want and stay the hell out of the way.”
“And let Doma rot?”
The older man sneers at the air. “This country has been rotting for a long long time. The ones on top never cared for us lil’ people, and now they’re trying to mobilize us to go against the Empire and die in the attempt.
Lots of families torn apart, and what ‘ave they done to make up for it? Lots of people ended up like Yotsuyu-san, the Naeuri family clearly suffered.”
“…The what?” Adala does not expect this part. She grabs Yamabe’s arm in case he runs away before giving her a proper explanation. “Naeuri?”
“Ya, that’s her last name, isn’t it? Boss told me.” He eyes Adala strangely. “Don’t tell me you don’t know? Thought you two are close?”
“No…I never thought to ask.” In Adala’s head she had been calling Yotsuyu with the name that she knew from her old memories. Yotsuyu goe Brutus, the acting Imperial Viceroy of Doma who was also a Garlean citizen.
She should have known that she had not been a Garlean Citizen for her entire life, and that she had history that goes beyond what Adala have known of her. Shame fills her being for being so willingly ignorant.

If there is a little bit of a pout on her face, it is understandable, because she wishes these girls would stop treating her like a child just because she is in the younger age bracket of the ladies living in this building. She said that to one of the older courtesans, Kiku, and the latter only laugh elegantly at her rather petulant request.
“Dear, we shall stop treating you like a child when you stop being one.” Her eyes are sparkling, as if she knows a secret that not even Adala is privy to. “If you say you are an adult, then act like one. Do what your heart demands regardless of obstacles, and take her away.”
Adala gives her a long look, and then squints her eyes. “My what said what? Who am I taking away?”
Kiku looks at her pitifully and gives a long sigh. And then she reaches out a hand to pat the top of Adala’s head, which only comes up to her nose. Adala sniffs indignantly at the height difference, but it only makes Kiku’s smile widen.
“You will understand when the time comes, but do not forget my advice, yes? Blast through the obstacles, my dear, I know you can do it.”

“It’s part of the procedure.” The xaela finds herself trying to ease the look of panic that’s starting to creep up into Yotsuyu’s pale eyes. “This doctor is our regular, he won’t hurt you. Right?” she demands with a forceful emphasis at the man beside her, who gulps and nods fervently.
“O-of course. I am here just to look you over. I have medicines.” The doctor raises his bag as if to say he’s harmless.
Adala nods with satisfaction. “I will be waiting out—” her words die in her mouth when Yotsuyu crosses the room in quick strides to immediately clutch at her sleeve. It is possibly the fastest Adala has seen this girl move and she finds herself struck dumb by the desperate eyes meeting hers in a silent request for her to stay.
