The Gem of Keroshek - [Elissa and Duncan]
A brief puff of air and the accompanying slap as the mail hit the desk came along with the word, a moderate sized pile of letters dropping in front of Elissa just atop where her eyes had lost focus in their attempt to read (for the second time) a proposal from the South Reaches with regard to post-blight disaster relief.
"Thank you, Charles." Elissa smirked, rubbing at her face for a moment and then plucking the top letter up off the pile. "Both for retrieving the post and for saving me from this awful treatise on Senator Bryland's blighted bovines."
Pulling a dagger from the top drawer, she slit open the envelope and pulled out the letter inside. Her eyes passed over the words four times in confusion before she decided to look at the return address on the front only to discover it didn't have one and hadn't been intended for her to begin with.
"Gamlen..." she whispered his name almost absently.
"I'm sorry?" Came the answer from across the desk drawing Elissa's eyes up to the assistant she'd forgotten was still standing waiting for further instructions.
"Oh, nothing. You're free to go for the day."
"Are you sure?" The young man arched a dirty-blonde eyebrow at her. "We were supposed to make several conference calls with Senator Sighard from Dragon's Peak and the representatives from The Bannorn."
"I was also supposed to read this treatise so I'd know what we were talking about." She snorted, rolling her eyes. "But as I haven't done that, the calls will have to be rescheduled, and you can do that in the relaxing comfort of your own home. Honestly, Charles. Go. Shoo. Cater yourself in dinner on me for your troubles."
"Fine, but whatever I order is going to include dessert and a bottle of wine, and you're making those calls tomorrow whether you've read the report or not." Charles said as he turned toward the door.
"Fine." Elissa retorted, watching as he disappeared out the door before adding. "Slave driver."
"I heard that! Now you're paying for breakfast too!"
The former assassin laughed, and shook her head, her eyes moving from her fiance's name on the front of the envelope to the cryptic --and not so vaguely threatening-- words on the paper inside.
I found the Gem of Keroshek. If you want it, come to Darktown. Alone
The Gem of Keroshek. She knew that name. Knew what it had done to the man she intended to marry. Knew what it cost him.
In the back of her mind she also knew that she should discuss this with him, but the rest of her just couldn't allow it. Not when this was so obviously a setup.
Not when it could start the entire process all over again.
After a moment's pause, she picked up her cellphone and dialed, listening to it ring several times before answer. "Duncan? Could you come over please? I have-- I have a favor to ask and I'd rather do it in person."
