"History, as nearly no one seems to know, is not merely something to be read...the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways and history is literally present in all that we do.
It is to history that we owe our frames of reference, our identities and our aspirations." - James Baldwin

I haven’t been active in tumblr. Here’s why: 1. It’s finals week 2. UC Berkeley has experienced an array of protests that have been going on just about every single night, with the police showing up in riot gear, trying to break us up for little or no reason. Some of yall probably heard that students and community members were tear gassed and beaten on multiple nights. This is true. (I was also there an received a couple back and neck injuries from police batons.) which has consequently moved the center of attention away from Ferguson and NYC to Berkeley, “historically known as the Hub for the free speech movement,” and has created space for opportunists to stamp their organization’s name on these protests, further deviating from the initial intention of creating solidarity with the people in Ferguson. The protests here have become actions against the violence protestors received the night before instead of solidarity with Ferguson that have experience all the shit we’ve been through these past few days for decades. The protests have become non-black dominated and thus has become a very contentious “issue” within the organizing spaces in Berkeley. Cal’s BSU will be hosting a couple actions these coming days/weeks that many of us are hoping will re-establish the reason we initially set out for the streets.
Tbh I still rather confused about everything that has happened. Maybe it’s the tear gas or the trauma of being shoved to the ground by a cop with seething red eyes, but it feels like many of us are just waiting for something larger to happen. The police are getting craftier and have begun to send provocateurs to instigate stuff. I’ve also heard reports about police debating on using live ammo. The police state is starting to rear its ugly head…idk what we should/will do.
