Happy Valentines! I Got a New Baby 🥺

Okay, so back in the fall we had to put our black void menace down. She had a tumor and was really sick and it broke my heart. But about a month ago, a friend called because they found a little black void kitty in the woods and wanted to know if we’d take her.

We didn’t hesitate.

She was under a pound, maybe about 4 weeks old. She was just starting to eat food but also liked being fed by hand (QUEEN SHIT).

At first she was scared of everything. She gave us little baby hisses every time we were in the room and always hid in a box or in a corner.

But we didn’t give up. Feral kittens need devotion and patience and lots of love. It’s been about a month and she’s made major progress! She loves to play. She chases her little balls toys around the bedroom and when we throw them, she brings them back in her mouth like a puppy 💀

She likes to sit by me whenever I read or work on my laptop and purr and pounce my fingers and run under my legs. If I’m laying on a pillow she need to lay on it too 😤

She lets my husband pet her and hug her occasionally. But mostly she is bouncing around like a lunatic doing what kittens do best!

Her name is Artemis which really fits her because babygirl is the BOSS of chasing her birdie toy 🤣

The world is a hard place but she is a little burst of joy and a reminder that there is always someone or something in need of love. So if you have some love to give, spread it around ♥️

For Valentines she (aka my husband) got me flowers and a card that say “Best Cat Mom” which is lowkey my highest achievement in life 🤣

THE GOD OF DEATH

Let me kick things off by talking about my perfect hot mess baby, brimming with so much black girl magic that she became a god.

Alice is constantly underestimated and overlooked, mostly because she likes to faff around and have fun. Also, like me, she is ruled by a gremlin brain that will not let her keep track of jack shit. But she's also deeply empathetic and clever as hell which makes her well suited for the job of Death.

She was in an abusive relationship for a long time, so when I thought about how her power would look at this point in her life, I imagined it would be sheer, unadulterated rage—just waves of heat and chaos. But I also thought it would feel like relief after years of just being knocked down. She might be smiting the ever-living shit out of you, but to her? It feels like joy.

Also, disintegrating someone in Blender for a visual effect was something I always wanted to do. It came out so cool, but my god, it was so challenging that I actually haven't attempted it again, LOL.

THE DEVIL (ATROPOS)

Making Jacques Villareal into the Devil has been so FUN. I mean, working with fire in Blender was wonderful and terrible, but I'm so proud of these shots. I wanted Jacques to feel seductive and yet dangerous. He's refined and he's ancient, so he's learned to pull his punches. But rest assured, he could wipe you out with a single thought.

Also, yes, I'm playing real fast and loose with mythology, but I've always thought of the Fates as devil-like characters. I just had this idea of Atropos shifting fates and outcomes via deals and ran with it. Jacques is always tempting you, holding out his hand, pulling you towards your fate. But whether it's a good fate or a bad one? Well, that ain't really his department.

FAE...er...FATE

In contrast, Jacques' obvious protege is rough around the edges. Even as a reincarnated demigod, Akira is still young, so he has not yet learned to pick his battles.

When I dress him up, I always find something to signal his rebellion: sneakers instead of dress shoes, or a suit jacket with no shirt. It's been fun trying to figure out how to capture his magic, his stubbornness…his absolute lack of charm. He's such a rat bastard, and I LOVE HIM FOR IT.

Akira is the dominant one in the relationship, but he's also the caretaker. He loves to fuss over Vlad and Alice and be driven mad by their shenanigans.

THE HUNT

Vlad was a challenge because I knew I wanted to build on some of my old lore and make him a monster, rather than just a vampire. But I still wanted to capture some of that “vampire aesthetic.” He's from a family of murder hillbillies, but he likes the finer things. His taste is quite gothic and dark. If he could wear a suit every day, he would.

He's also so unhinged he sometimes doesn't even seem like a threat. That is, until you find him humming to himself, covered in blood, holding someone's organs. In his shots, I'm always trying to balance the sinister with the whimsy. Oddly enough, he’s the comic relief in my story 😂

Vlad is a brat to his core, but he's also unsure whether he's lovable or worthy of love. The world is so difficult for him because, despite being person-shaped, he's not a person, so I'm often playing with angles or depth filters to make you feel visually off-balance, because that's what Vlad feels inside all the time.

But seriously, the three of them together are perfect for each other, and they own my heart. I’m always trying to capture their personalities and highlight their monstrous and mundane sides.

THE NETHERWORLD

Building the Netherworld in Blender has been amazing (and the fucking worst, LOL). It’s really cool to bring the world that was knocking around in my head to life. Blender has allowed me to capture the strangeness of the place, to make it feel outside of time, almost uncanny. And it's been a blast to create and curate all these new characters to fill it up and wreak havoc on the afterlife (we see you, Edith). It's crazy labor-intensive, but I don't regret it for one second.

Shout out to all the creators! I desperately needed Akira to be smoking his cigarette, and these poses from @sciophobis were perfect. His eye shadow is by @lavenfurs, and it's GORGEOUS. I have been salivating over @deebert's open-chest armor, and now I'm finally getting to use it 😭 oh my gosh, and his suit is by @xiuminuwu, and I'm kind of obsessed with it ❤️

I needed to start working on characters for Part Two of Monster Date Night, so this challenge came at the right time. And what a challenge it was. I imagined Eris all dressed in red, sort of like a "Valentine's gone wrong." But working with blues helped me refresh her look, and I'm really happy with how it turned out!

MEET ERIS (DISCORD)

Eris has never met a fight she didn’t want to have. She’s never met a creature incapable of being riled up, either. Despite her name, she likes to have a good time, and she’s happiest when she’s laughing. Laughing at the misery of others, maybe, but laughing all the same.

Kitten updates 🤣

We have survived the spay! The indignity of the donut cone is gone! 🤣 Her new thing is climbing the window screens but only when I’m sitting at the table to work because she knows she not allowed on it 💀

Also every night she jumps into the bed with her toys and plays on top of us while we are sleeping 🤣 then when we move too much she gets insulted and leaves 😒

I often wake up to her climbing down the headboard onto my chest so she can use my boobs as a pillows 💀

We tried to put these pillows away but she whined so now “pillow mountain” is a permanent part of the house 💀

Yes, we are under the control of smol black void.

I need you to know that Alice in Paralives was so cranky and not having any fun until she started playing Boyfriend Dungeon, which tracks (yes I will be adding Akira and Vlad to the game shortly, I am unwell)

In addition to work continuing to kick my ass and husband getting into a car accident (car totaled, but he is fine) the baby also got spayed. She believes this donut is beneath her dignity. She has escaped from it three times. She also escaped from the cone and her recovery suit onesie. We have decided her middle name is now Houdini. 💀

Sorry to be MIA! Been distracted by becoming a mom of three 😭 Husband and I added 6 week old littermates to the household bc we are weak and couldn’t bear to only take one 😂 they are currently chasing each other and crawling all over my legs.

Their older sister hasn’t met them yet. She’s too busy supervising the windowsill 💀 but we are slowly introducing their scents to each other…
