By the time I sold my Lusso to acquire my GTO, my new friend that I met at a Ferrari Oeners Club meeting in Lis Angeles had already sold his Lusso to acquire the Breadvan, Count Volpi's hotrod SWB Berlinetta created for him by Bizzarrini to compete with the dominating GTOs. They were both mind-blowing cars. One evening at Matthew's Plush Bunny nightclub, he asked if I wanted to take the Breadvan for a drive. "Yes," was my immediate answer and he tossed me the key--Matthew was busy making arrangements for the upcoming appearance of the Ike & Tina Revue or some such. A light-heart tribute to the car that has a history like no other Ferrari: > Started out life in 1961 as a 250GT SWB, dubbed the ‘SEFAC Hot Rod’ due to it being the ultimate SWB spec at the time. > Competed strongly at the Tour de France & Daytona. > Converted to the unique Kamm tail body (designed by Bizzarrini) in 1962 by wealthy Italian; Count Volpi, using a team of engineers who had walked out of Ferrari. The Breadvan was developed against the wishes of Enzo Ferrari > Labelled the Breadvan by the British press and ‘la Camionette’ (little truck) by the French. Disparaging terms at the time, now used more affectionately > The vehicle competed in the ‘62 Le Mans, and was leading all the other Factory 250GTOs before a broken propshaft forced retirement > Painted black as a joke by Gianni Agnelli as it reminded him of a hearse. > Involved in a police chase on the French Riviera, driven by playboy Gunter Sachs (later husband of Bridget Bardot). Joerg Brosowski sent me this photo of my friend and former Ferrari Breadvan owner Matthew Ettinger holding a photograph of the Bizzarrini thar Joerg bought from him. It prompted this memory of buying Bizzarrini parts for Mathew in Torino: I was sitting in our compartment and realized that my father, who had gone to get us sandwiches, hadn't returned and I was getting hungry. Though he didn't speak any Italian, he was pretty good at making himself understood but I felt he might be in need of assistance. I went to look for him but didn't have far to go. Out in the corridor I found him making himself understood with a very attractive Italian woman. From the way she was looking at him--and he at her--it was obvious that the sandwiches had been forgotten and something else had taken precedence. As I went by them on my way to find food, I smiled and nodded but did not interrupt. A few minutes later, my father joined me in the dining car.
