Hey could uh tell me about how Eliza and Alex reacted after Phillips death? Bring on the feels🙃

Since I’m on a role with the sad topics tonight, let’s do this!!!

Okay, so first you need to know exactly how much the Hamiltons adored their eldest son

Philip was basically a mini-Hamilton in that he graduated from Columbia, liked to talk that big talk like his father, was very handsome, and was, at times, a “Naughty young man” as Ham lovingly describes him in a letter

Hamilton called Philip his “best and brightest hope”

He was likely dreaming up big things for Philip; possibly envisioning Philip following in his own footsteps

(It’s also important to note that, in general, Hamilton was known as a loving and devoted father)

Now get ready for the tears.......

When Hamilton heard the duel went wrong, he booked it over to the house of a doctor he trusted and told him Philip was in need of him

Hamilton then proceeded to faint from his anxiety, and had to stay at the doctor’s home for a bit before he could go to Philip

When Ham got to Philip, he tested his pulse, turned to the doctor, and said “Doctor, I despair” in what the doctor called “a tone and manner that can never be effaced from my memory”

After Hamilton got there, Eliza arrived......

(She was three months pregnant at this point)  

Robert Troup said “The scene I was present at when Mrs. Hamilton came to see her son on his deathbed ... and when she met her husband and son in one room beggars all description!”

So, basically, it was incredibly heartbreaking :’(((

His parents stayed with him all night, each on either side of his bed, clinging to him

I’ll spare you to description of the scene because it’s just... horribly sad

Philip Hamilton died at 5 AM the morning following his duel

He was buried in Trinity Church Yard not long after, on what was said to be a rainy day

Hamilton had to be held up by his friends at the funeral :’(

Eliza was distraught and inconsolable for a long time afterward :’(

Amazingly, she did not miscarry and gave birth to “Little Phil”

Hamilton fell into what seemed to be the deepest depression of his life

He could not return to his writing for comfort like he had so many other times in the face of grief

It took him four months to acknowledge any of the sympathy notes he received after Philip’s death

That is a long time for a man who was always, always writing

Robert Troup said Hamilton was “strongly stamped with grief”

You can pretty much see the despair on his face :’(((

Hamilton seemed to return to religion in a much more obvious way after Philip’s death

John Church Hamilton also remembers his father walking the grounds of the Grange a lot after Philip died

By all accounts, Hamilton was entirely changed after Philip’s death

Aka, he was incredibly depressed :’(((

As for Eliza...

History hasn’t recorded much of her reaction, but we can assume she was heartbroken, to say the least

The fact that she safely delivered a baby through all of this is absolutely amazing and tells us a lot about her strength
