people are really kind and often leave multi chapter comments on Proxy (I don’t know why this fic in particular seems to get chapter by chapter comments but I’m grateful)

but they tend to go silent on the second to last chapter and are never heard from again

I choose to believe this is not because the fic is bad, but because the incredibly long sex scene in that chapter actually murdered them

Edgeworth is just considering hanging up and re-evaluating his short list of friends when Phoenix returns in earnest, his warm sotto voice slipping into Edgeworth’s ear like a dirty little secret.

“Sorry. Sorry. Shit. I woke her up.”

Edgeworth has never known Maya or Pearl to sleep at Phoenix’s apartment. But maybe it happens, innocent as pie. And maybe it’s a woman Edgeworth has never met, the sort of lovely, accessible, smiling person that Phoenix deserves. And that would be fine.

Edgeworth has no reason to be upset about Phoenix’s personal life, after all.

“I see.” Edgeworth says, trying to cover for his own silence. All things considered, his voice sounds remarkably even. One might call it bright.

Phoenix laughs again, but this time it’s all bubbles. “Oh man, I really think I’m in trouble this time.”

“How so.”

“She’s… she’s wonderful, Miles.”

Edgeworth feels the exact second his soul tries to leave his body.

“Cute, sweet, funny. Just… perfect, really. I look at her and I mean… ha ha ohhh goddddd?! What is wrong with me? I think… I’m in love? No. It’s too soon, it’s too soon.”
