“Surely there must be another way? This all just seems so… barbaric.”
“I can assure you that these treatments are all at the forefront of modern medicine. Or so the good Doctor Sievers reassures me. Come now; if it is good enough for Frau Hutter, it is more than good enough for you.”
Flinching, you lower your gaze, his admonishment hurting far more than the ties that bind you. If anything, Friedrich has been far more gentle with you than you have any right to expect. A common maid wandering the halls in the early hours of the morning in nothing but her undergarments and a robe — it is a wonder that he hasn’t seen fit to have you thrown out on the streets. It is one thing for the wife of one of his oldest and dearest friends to exhibit such strange behaviours. It is quite another for a member of his own household to follow suit.
When Frau Harding had agreed to take you on as part of their household staff, it had felt like a dream come true. Now, you can’t help but think of how quickly that dream has turned into a nightmare. Hands clenching, you tug against your restraints — torn sheets, tied tightly enough to leave red marks around your ankles and wrists and waist — trying desperately to find some relief. When Friedrich found you in the hallway between his family’s private rooms and the guest rooms, he had been most unimpressed.
Demanding answers you had no hope of giving without further incriminating yourself, claiming that it was no more than sleepwalking had been your first reaction — one that you are beginning to regret dearly.
You hadn’t considered the implications of such a claim. “Herr Harding, please; I have sleepwalked since I was a child, no more than once or twice a week, I swear. It is hardly a new malady. It has never caused me — nor anyone else — any harm before.”
Your corset feels too tight around your chest, your ribs, your aching waist. Before he had begun tearing the sheets for your bonds, Friedrich had made sure to tighten the laces, syncing you in further and further and further, inch by inch, until your breaths came in short, sharp, desperate little pants. Another suggestion from the good doctor, or so you had been told.
“Please, you must believe me.”
