An Italian Child (Tuscan Girl Plaiting Straw)
Artist: William Holman Hunt (English, 1827-1910)
Date: 1869
Medium: Oil paint on canvas
Collection: Lady Lever Art Gallery, Liverpool, England
Description
Hunt's art was a truthful depiction of nature infused with moral purpose. He made many trips to the Holy Land to paint religious subjects, and in 1866 travelled to Palestine with his wife, Fanny. The couple were detained in Florence, and Fanny died there shortly after giving birth to their son, Cyril. Hunt returned to Italy in 1869 to complete the design for her tomb. He stayed with an English friend at Fiesole and painted two portraits of the gardener’s children, of which this is one. A dove rests on the girl’s shoulder, symbolic of her dove-like gentleness and innocence.

Artist: Baccio Maria Bacci (Italian, 1888-1974)
Date: 1926-1929
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: The Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy
Description
A peaceful postprandial scene: four friends are chatting around a table in a house that is easily recognisable as the painter’s home in Fiesole, near Florence. As well as Bacci, who has painted himself seated on the right, with his dog in front of him, are the artist Guido Peyron, with guitar, and the artists’ wives.
