this is just yet another reason haku loves ino: they can always trust her to pick up exactly what they put down. haku braces a hand against their chest with a theatrical gasp, playing every bit of scandalized. ❛  Me? You know I am saving myself for marriage!  ❜ which is just about the fattest lie haku has ever told.

ino’s warmth is a familiar comfort. with her lips against their ear, she almost sounds like the gossipy angel on their shoulder — or the devil, depending on her mood.

❛  Maybe, maybe not,  ❜ haku amends, tapping the gel pen against their lips. ❛  You could say we are seeing a lot of each other these days, but possessing byakugan means Neji sees a lot of everyone.  ❜ Yes, it is a terrible joke, thanks for noticing. No, they aren’t sorry. ❛  We train together regularly.  ❜ the sly quirk of their lips says ‘interpret that as you see fit.’ ❛  He is.... very different than how people portray him.  ❜ perhaps sweet is not the right word, but it’s the best they can come up with at the moment. ❛  Neji is ....  ❜

attentive. always watching. perhaps that sounds unnerving to the average person, but neji’s perceptiveness means he notices the little things, like the way the hair on the left side of haku’s face always falls into their eyes when they laugh, which is annoying, but when they are alone neji brushes the hair from their eyes and tucks it behind their ear without a word. he seems to know haku’s favorite post-training snacks without asking, and wordlessly offers haku tangerines on occasion. and they love his attention: the way his eyes flicker to their lips when they smile. the way his gaze intensifies when he wants to touch them but won’t let himself, and the way his fingers flex and coil when haku breaches the distance between them.

and, goodness, his hands — he’s only given haku a shoulder rub once after haku’d sustained a number of juuken blows during practice, but haku could have sworn they were boneless by the time they were done.

it takes a moment for haku to realize they’ve trailed off. ❛  Neji is sweet, in his own way. I know that is a controversial statement, but I stand by it.  ❜ they clear their throat and roll their eyes at ino’s smug look. it does nothing to calm the rosy blush blooming across their cheeks.

❛  How do you always know everything? If you say a little birdie told you, I will lose my mind.  ❜

oh also let me shoutout robyn (netsurai/flamesbuilt/zanzou) who i've had the immense pleasure to have by my side as a writing partner and friend for almost a year. throwing around scenarios and creating aus with her has been the best part of my whole year so much love to her !!!! ♥♥

“ but mama ! ” chouchou leans forward , eyes widening even more as she gives the certified puppy dog look that almost constantly works , “ why can’t we go to kumo and visit my uncles and aunties there ? it’s your home isn’t it ? ” is there an alternative reason on why she wants to go to kumo ? absolutely , the boys are much cuter there than here. “ i don’t have any missions coming up any time soon and i don’t think you have any missions coming up soon either ! papa will be fine alone ! ” can she make those decisions by herself ? she shouldn’t. “ i want to see where mama grew up ! ”/ @fightrisen.

it takes one mother to bury another.

haku has forgotten their mother. losing a loved one is not like it is described in films or movies. there is no soft laughter haunting them, no spirits lurking at the ends of corridors, no faded smiles & soft whispers unraveling over time. 

the only phantoms are the questions that haunt their heart. how had her hands felt when she pulled haku into her lap to braid their thick, dirty hair ? when she taught haku to read, did she use birch sticks or yew to dig katakana into the cold, hard ground ? did her scream shatter & splinter like icicles as she died, or was it more a gurgling river ? what color were her eyes: a violet so dark it looked black in the right lighting, honey brown like haku’s, or dirt-brown like the wet hole they’d buried her in ? they remember she smelled of cold earth & something else, something older, darker. they didn’t know what. they still don’t.

it is hard to remember her name, sometimes. ito sango around the others, but she had let haku call her ayai when no one was around. she’d claimed it was her secret nickname. it was only when zabuza revealed haku’s heritage that they realized sango was not her real name at all. over a decade living a lie  . . .  how painful it must have been to become a new woman, to become a nameless pawn of fate.

it doesn’t matter. ito sango  --  yuki ayai is dead. 

the day haku realizes they’ve all but forgotten their mother, they go to rin nohara. perhaps it is cruel to bury his mother alongside the woman who has replaced her, whose soft face & decisive voice have replaced the ugly memories with something sweeter & more tangible. she was soft in ways their mother could not afford to be most of the time. haku likes to think the two would have gotten along. their mother was a quiet woman. rin would have made her laugh.

haku teaches rin the yuki burial rites: how to stack the sacred stones & where, which direction the empty bier will face. rin complies without complaint, following haku’s cues, for which haku is grateful.  when it is done rin kneels beside haku as they lay the bitter ceremonial herbs on the shrine & pray.

Dear mother, 

I hope you are happy where ever you are. I am sorry I could not protect you. I always will be. I hope one day you find it in your heart to forgive me. 

I love you. I will never stop loving you.

I have found a new home and family here. I pray you have found one too.

he flicks her thigh, both brows arched in amusement.

geta dig into hard earth as he skids back, digging small furrows into the soil as he goes. his right shoulder still smarts from the absorption of karui’s blow with his blade, yet a smile blossoms across his lips at the silver glint of a senbon imbedded in his opponent’s shoulder. when it comes to pure force, he’s pretty sure she hits harder ━  but he knows he’s faster.
