Mastery Journal – Directing Talent.
For this month, I have studied “Directing Talent.” Yes, my understanding of the subject has increased as a result of taking this course. The course was organized the way it is usually prepared to be. But nevertheless, I wish this class was longer.
The challenges provided for this course were appropriate, with real world challenges. I personally felt on a movie set environment directing each time. We have worked with the same set for all our projects and I have enjoyed these exercises. They were hands on training and gave me an excitement to be directing in a movie set like I have expected.
The materials for this course were relevant. The textbooks, the technologies and gear we have used throughout this month were up to date, comparatively to some other film school programs that I have visited.
The curriculum obviously described the course content the way this program is set it to be here at Full Sail University, and in a competitive and challenging way compare to other master’s in film production programs out there. The course projects offered very simple, straightforward and basic learning experiences.
Mr. Allen Gorney, the instructor is very knowledgeable. He is very accomplished in the subject of acting and directing. His communications, guidance, comments were very helpful in helping me understand the subject matter and to improve. He answers questions, he provides feedback, he creates a comfortable and stress-free environment where everybody feels free to interact and be part of the class. I am satisfied with the information provided by the instructor. The experience we have gotten, as directors this month was priceless. I have given my best work and have learned how to communicate with the talents as a director on a movie set. I know what is expected from a director and how he should organize his sets. I am looking forward in my next class to learn how to manage an entire crew as a director. I only had to work with one camera operator, no lights etc.…
The top strengths of this course were the knowledge of the instructor to the subjects. The materials provided to do the work and the understanding of what the course is about. My suggestions to improve this course would be to increase the lab hours. To give an entire crew to the directors, just so we can feel like we are on a real movie set with an entire crew, different camera operators etc.… Our visions, the scenes setups should be exactly how we envisioned them. Therefore we should have a bit of more choices as far as sets are concerned. No limits should be put to any of the classes and the exercises we do here in school. Our launchbox should be more relevant and pertinent to what we are learning. Full Sail must include a CAMERA in the launchbox. Students should have enough equipment in that launchbox to eat, breathe, sleep, and live film production and experimenting outside the classrooms.
