Conclave (2024), dir. Edward Berger
Anora (dir. Sean Baker) x VIFF 2024.
Baker makes his so-called "socially real" version of the sex worker Cinderella fairytale one might lazily describe as a contemporary riff on Pretty Woman meets something like Uncut Gems. Anora showcases an exhilarating depiction of the whirlwind nature of a twisted romance.
Screened at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations program.
The Lodge from NEON | Filmnation | Hammer
The Lodge follows two siblings who are snowed in with Grace, the younger woman that their separated father plans to marry. Just as the kids begin to warm to their stepmother-to-be, events intercede and threaten to dig up psychological demons from Grace’s childhood as a member of a religious cult.
Richard Armitage, Alicia Silverstone, and Riley Keough star.
Beautiful Boy (2018) Director: Felix van Groeningen, Actores: Steve Carell, Timothée Chalamet, Maura Tierney, Amy Ryan.

Conclave (dir. Edward Berger) x VIFF 2024.
There's an operatic tension to the West German-born Austrian-Swiss director's religious Vatican thriller based on the novel of the same name by bestselling British author Robert Harris. It stars Ralph Fiennes as the cardinal tasked with overseeing the election of the Roman Catholic successor to the recently deceased Pope as he discovers a series of concerning secrets about many of the leading candidates as they vye for power. It's a tightly wound melodrama about a detailed religious electoral process no one really knows about, with strong allegories to the dysfunction of contemporary national elections. No one is guessing that ending either.
Screening at the 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations series at the Vancouver Playhouse on Sept. 29 & Oct. 4.
Fingernails (dir. Christos Nikou) x TIFF 2023.
Jessie Buckley and Riz Ahmed star in an oddball sci-fi romance where couples can take a biological test to prove definitively whether not one or both members are actually in love. Nikou's a slow, lightly dystopian exploration of long-term relationships playing with determinism and fate in romance. It's too bad the story feels undercooked and never fully takes advantage of its talented cast. Buckley does so much subtle, facial acting in a mournful performance of longing through distant love.
