lore drop four : humans
tl;dr lifespan of ~80-100 years. not witches, but can have magic. mundane humans have no abilities. psychometric humans can sense other magical beings. foreseeing humans have intense deja vu / reve. talented humans have one special ability. when turned into vampires, they do not keep their abilities. if a talented is turned into a werecreature, they do keep their ability.
HUMANS, for the most part, are entirely mundane creatures. depending on who you ask, they shouldn’t be considered creatures at all. to define creatures and non-creatures, you need to go into a deep biological level that science isn’t able to detect yet, and even then, there would be no difference. this is because, no matter what, every person is inherently magic. every single person is made up of tiny molecules, and you think that wouldn’t be considered magical? while every human is inherently magical, this doesn’t mean that every human has magic.
there are four categories of magic within humans: mundane, psychometric, foreseeing, and talented. it’s believed by some that many centuries ago, humans could possess much stronger magic in the form of witch magic, but over many millennia and many more centuries, most of that magic has been squeezed out of the lineages through breeding with the mundane. many humans with abilities may not be aware they have an ability - they may simply think they're very good at this one thing, constantly have this uncanny valley feeling, or constantly have a sense of deja vu. many simply see it as their "little everyday superpower". vampires and werewolves may have a little more awareness on the matter, but this is relatively unlikely.
culturally, humans differ greatly in many, many ways. there is one specific type of culture that should be discussed, however, and that is hunting culture. hunters refers to those who hunt supernatural creatures. common reasons for hunters to start hunting go as follows: someone they loved was killed by a creature, they joined a religious group, or they were raised into a hunter's group. there are absolutely various large hunting associations that work in the shadows and the deepest, darkest corners of the world, but staff has chosen to leave this open for members to develop on their own.
the MUNDANE are entirely self explanatory. these are your run-of-the-mill humans with absolutely no magical abilities whatsoever. while completely mundane humans may experience deja vu, deja reve, uncanny valley, and even have talents of their own, these are not things that they have in a preternatural or supernatural way. they still need to work for their talents, and the feelings of uncanny valley or deja vu are simply natural feelings that any person might get. mundaneness is a dominant genetic trait, and if two parents are mundane, they will never result in a psychometric or foreseeing child, but may result in a talented child.
the PSYCHOMETRICS are able to sense magic around them. this may manifest in many ways, most commonly it manifests as an uncanny valley sensation upon looking at said magical person or object. some psychometrics describe the feeling as pins and needles, heart palpitations, or dizziness. it isn’t uncommon for a particularly old vampire or a particularly powerful magical object to cause a psychometric to faint. psychometrics are a recessive genetic trait. if one parent is psychometric and one is mundane or foreseeing, one in every four children are likely to be psychometric. if a psychometric is bitten by a werecreature, they lose their ability upon their first turning.
the FORESEEING aren’t so much seers as they are able to predict the future. while they may not even be aware of their ability, they are constantly getting the feeling of “i have seen this before, exactly as it’s happening now” or “i think i dreamt about this, once”. all of their foresight comes in the form of deja vu / reve. while this isn’t a particularly powerful ability, it is by far one of the more distressing abilities. while some deja reve foreseers are able to write down their dreams and hope to stumble upon them before anything bad can happen, deja vu foreseers simply stumble into a situation and know what’s going to happen, with no way to prevent what will happen. foresight is a dominant genetic trait. if a foreseer and a psychometric have children, three out of four children might have the ability of foresight. there is an equal chance to have a foreseeing child and a mundane child. if a foreseer is bitten by a werecreature, they lose their ability upon their first turning.
the TALENTED are somewhat unique. some may call them gifted, but no one put their talents upon them, they were simply discovered at random. a talent and being talented are entirely different things in this context. a talent is something that needs to be practiced. the talented are simply able to perform their talent without any practice whatsoever, and do it perfectly every time. the talented often have small talents, but very effective ones. you may be able to cook meals perfectly on the first try, or mimic any bird call. some may have talents as small as being able to snap so loud that it can be heard over a shouting crowd. to be talented is an entirely random trait. if someone talented is bitten by a werecreature, they DO NOT lose their ability.
if a human is turned into a vampire, they lose any and all abilities they may have had as a human.
lore drop five : the seekers subplot
ever since you were young, you’ve always been fascinated by myths and folklore. you used to collect books, things like the complete anatomy of werewolves and an essay on the differences between dragons. you’d been something of a nerdy kid.
not that long ago, you’re on your way home. you just got a brand new dash cam, one of the fancy ones that the cops in town used, and you’re excited to show your roommate. it’s dark. something runs into the road, and it’s too late to slam the breaks. you hit the deer head on, and it roles right over your hood and into the bed of your truck,
the dashcam catches your string of curses, but when you turn back to look at the deer, there is no deer. there’s a man, dressed in the shreds of what was once a flannel, mostly nude. the man is dying, so you speed backwards down the road to get the man to the local hospital. he dies on the way.
it takes you months to look at the dashcam footage. when you look at it, you’re stunned by what looks like a hulking deer in the road, spindly legs twisted and neck too long. the antlers razor sharp. had they broken through your windshield, you would’ve been dead. unable to process what you saw, you start to do research. that is how you stumble upon an urban legends forum called occultwatch.com.
the forums were full of videos, just like your dashcam footage. you upload to the forum, and you tell your story. soon enough, you’re approached by another user: jade2868. you’d seen him around the forums plenty ― turns out, he owned the forum itself. talking to him, he lets you in on a secret: the supernatural are real, and his group is going to prove it. he wants you in on it.
of course, you agree. how could you not? at least, you’d be a part of something.
they call themselves Supernatural Evidence, Exploration, and Knowledge Extraction Researchers ― the seekers. they will rip apart the wool that was pulled over their eyes, and reveal the truth to the world. it’s only a matter of time.
seeker subplot details this plot is only open to humans that aren’t aware of magic. we will accept humans that are not mundane, but they should not be wholly aware of any abilities they may possess.

drop number three : goldcrest, north carolina
goldcrest, north carolina ( pop. 13k ), is a town steeped in history. goldcrest was named after the trees and a singular strange property they all seemed to have: their yellow leaves. many trees in the area, no matter the species, seem to grow both yellow and green leaves. legend has it that the settlers that formed the town only chose the area because they’d found a golden spruce tree, and deemed the land lucky. the amount of yellow leaves seem to get more concentrated the closer to the center of town that you get ― even if said trees are imported.
goldcrest, an idyllic little town settled in the backwoods of appalachia, was built on the backs of irish immigrants in 1846 who came over to america in order to escape british rule. upon landing in new york, they weren’t welcomed, and were forced to move south. for many years, goldcrest was completely isolated until 1913 when a wealthy businessman stumbled upon the community after becoming lost in the winding mountain roads. seeing potential in the town, the businessman used his own money to further develop the community. later, the businessman had the town renamed, advertised to his friends, and that is where the huge class differences began.
this businessman and his friends turned out to be vampires, fabulously wealthy and crafting the town to their liking. many of those that were too poor to fit into their circle were pushed a little further south, across the creek. this is how the neighbourhood of south creek gained its name. while south creek is far more settled than it once was, it began as a couple of cabins.
south creek eventually became a universal name for the southern, poorer areas of goldcrest. in modern times, south creek is an extremely low income area, with homes that haven’t been updated since the 60s and run-down trailer parks. the south side, while there is a healthy population of humans, is largely run by two werecreature packs. these two packs have been at each other’s throats for as long as anyone can remember, and have been warring over territory in south creek since the 80s. the redfern pack controls a large portion of south creek now, whereas the territory of the darkwater pack has been steadily growing smaller as the months go by.
on the other end of town is uphill, also referred to as north creek to differentiate it from south creek. uphill is full of sprawling green lawns, homeowners associations, and neighbourhood watches. beautiful white-panelled homes, mansions, and mcmansions sit on this side of the creek. if you weren’t born uphill, the likely of you moving into uphill is little to none. most of the people in uphill are old money, descendants of that businessman and his friends ― or, “descendents” may be more accurate ― and outsiders looking for a gorgeous mountain getaway for when their other homes got too boring.
the area around goldcrest is mostly mountain and forest, with very little land for farming. there’s many different legends about the woods and forest that anyone born and raised in appalachia would know. don’t look into the trees when you’re on a walk or driving, never call back when you hear screaming in the woods, never look too long at the deer who’s neck is just a little too long and eyes just a little too reflective. people from goldcrest are taught to respect the things that you don’t see, and those things will respect you.
most of the town’s income comes from mining and factories that have been built in south creek. there are various different mines scattered through the mountain around goldcrest, many of which being closed and just places for adventurous teenagers to hang out and get drunk with their friends. however, the two mines that are still running employ a large portion of goldcrest’s population, and have since their openings in 1847 and 2001. if you don’t work in the mine, it’s very likely you either work at the meat packing plant, or the walmart warehouse that was opened just five years back. of course, there are small family-owned businesses, stores, diners, the usual. in recent years, corporations have been opening locations in goldcrest or in nearby towns. goldcrest only got walmart in the past decade, and unveiled it’s very own mcdonalds in november of 2002. while there isn’t a community college, there is a trade school in town.
drop number two : premise!
it's the year 2003, and there's a dead girl in the woods.
it's the year 2003, and the girl doesn't know she's dead yet.
it's the year 2003, and your world is a muggy evening, a bruised-apricot sunset, a small southern town- its pleasantries and idle gossip and west-bound winds. your small southern town is pleasant, as all small southern towns are. you bike along the winding hill trails, mud kicks up from the back tire, the sun sets slow enough you'll make it home by dusk. the trails are lined by trees with specks of gold in them, but you know better. the idea of being out at night is enough to make your skin crawl, your head full of stories your grandmother learned of her grandmother who learned them from her grandmother before her.
way down the road your best friend swears he saw a wolf the size of a man, once, at night. and your mother refuses to leave after the sun has gone. she told you why, once, but you know it's all just fairy tales. beautiful men with pale, ashen skin and razor sharp fangs? beasts roaming the trailer parks, tufts of fur poking out of their torn sports jerseys. it's the stuff out of horror movies, and those have never scared you.
even still, there are rules that stick in your head. don't look in the trees. don't whistle at night. if you hear someone call out your name, no you don't.
it's the year 2003, and you don't believe their superstition. how could you? long since have the days passed for stories of beautiful men with pale, ashen skin and fanged smiles. beasts roaming trailer parks, tufts of fur razored along the edges of torn sports jerseys. it's ludicrous. cheap horror movie shticks given too much spotlight.
still, the darkening sky tightens your throat.
it's the year 2003, and the dark closes in faster when you're stranded.
you ran out of minutes on your phone last week and haven't been able to afford a new card, so all you can do is hoof it down the hill toward home, rotten bike in tow. there is a howl. a coyote calling to the full moon? or a mugger throwing you off? crime has been rising, lately, but your wallet's on a chain and you're damned dirt poor, anyway. thunder grumbles, a low warning - or is it a growl? the woods are deathly silent as you pause, searching the trees for movement, for some sign that your mother's fairy tales are true.
it's the year 2003, and the woods give their answer.
it's the last thing you ever hear.
all that is left of you is missing posters and a broken bike hidden away in a ditch.
---
welcome to goldcrest. life, here, is good- if you're human. at the salon, the worst the ladies tut about are old money riches, trailer-park trash fires, the widening cut of class disparity, the latest disappearance. the creatures of the town know the truth. vampires glide through office parties and debutante balls, peddling antiquity and blue blood. werewolves scrape the bottom of the barrel and stalk their neighbourhoods on full moon nights, searching for flesh and family, held down by bitter rivalry with the town's vampiric upper-crust and inter-pack conflict.
the statute of secrecy that hides the supernatural's existence from humans has held for centuries, but goldcrest's veil of pleasantry is thinning by the day. it's only a matter of time before it's all too much to hide from prying eyes.
could they be yours?
drop number one : the rules!
the “needs to be said”s
here on final nail, we aim to create a community that is laid-back, welcoming, and close-knit. to achieve this, we firmly believe that the comfort of standing members comes first, and that every incident should be take on a case-by-case basis. we do not operate on a “warnings” system ― depending on the severity of the situation, you may just get a slap on the wrist, or you may be banned and kicked.
we have an absolutely 0 tolerance policy for harassment of any kind, nor do we accept any out-of-character bigotry. as we do consider ourselves a darker setting, we’d like to note that things that may appear in play absolutely do not reflect the writer’s view on a subject. if a player is found to be spreading racist, xenophobic, lgbtphobic, etc rhetoric, they will be removed from the community immediately and not welcomed back under any circumstances.
powerplaying and godmodding without player permission is strictly prohibited. for combat, if needed, we have a dicebot on the discord to help you decide the outcome of those threads. when it comes to godmodding, always ask the player in which the information affects. unless they have given you their permission, you may NOT use information your character isn’t aware of.
all members of FN must join our discord. all rules that are laid out here must also be followed in the discord.
site content
final nail is a mature, 18+ rp with a rating of 3/3/3. this means that players may include any amount of language, violence, and sexual content. however, this does not make the site a free-for-all. while we accept these topics to be used in threads, there are some limits to what we will allow to be written. characters may be written using hard drugs, participate in extreme violence, and other such subjects.
this list includes topics that may be included in your character’s backstory, as long as they do not romanticize / glorify the situation, the victim is treated written with respect and dignity, and the character is not a perpetrator of the listed triggers.
incest, sexual assault / rape, lack of consent in sexual situations, csa, and sexual deviancy such as pedophilia
the following topics may not be used in threads or character backstories.
zoophilia / beastiality, use of omegaverse lore
if a thread includes triggering or mature content, you must tag it as having such content. you can do this by using our trigger warning template in your posts, and by tagging the thread’s title with [tw] / [m]. we also ask that if your character participates in a thread that contains kink or bdsm content, that the specific content is tagged.
discriminatory content in a y2k background
we are set early in the year of 2003 in the united states. in the real world, this was an extremely turbulent time, with the war in the middle east being at its height, as well as islamophobia being rampant around the world. a lot of tragedies happened and a lot of people died or were killed. in general, the early 2000s were a horrible time for all sorts of discrimination, and we will not bar players from including these topics in their writing as staff feels that it would be a gross erasure of very real problems. however, we do ask that players proceed with EXTREME care, and note that any threads said to mention heavy topics maybe be subject to monitored in order to ensure that the subject is being handled respectfully. we also ask that you discuss anything and everything with your writing partner before it’s included in a thread. these are topics that still affects people in their real lives every day, and can be extremely triggering for many.
we heavily encourage members to read our culture guide section on the effects of the war on terror, as well as islamophobia post-9/11. this guide also has resources on other prevalent issues of the time. we also encourage members to do their own research, search for their own sources, and educate themselves before attempting to touch the topic at all.
character creation and threading
members should register an ooc account before registering a character account. all information on your member profile MUST be filled in before your character can be accepted. your ooc account does not have graphics other than an uploaded avatar. otherwise, this is all of your ooc information, such as your triggers, no-goes, and other such information. all characters must be over the age of 18.
final nail does not have a minimum word count for threads, nor do we have a character limit. we do, however, ask that you know your limits, and know what you can handle. communication is key here, and if we don’t see the activity then we won’t be seeing new characters. your first six characters are totally free, but after that, you will need twenty-five posts ACROSS all existing characters. this does not mean that you need twenty-five posts on every single character. you may have one post on one character, three on another, so on and so forth. we should see at least one post on all existing characters, and the posts may be either threads or comms.
when creating a character, we require all profile fields to be filled out in full unless they do not apply to your character. this especially includes the “commonly appearing triggers” section of the profile. the commonly appearing triggers section lets you put topics that your character often mentions in threads. for example, if your character john doe is a drug addict, he may often mention drugs in threads he partakes in. this will immensely help any admins planning events pair you to a partner, and help potential partners know what they may or may not be getting into. if this does not count for your character, please simply print “none” into that field.
on final nail, we encourage people to play characters that are queer, transgender, and/or a person of color. we ask that you please do research into any group that you may not be a part of before writing said group. we absolutely will not tolerate racebending or whitewashing and we suggest you find faces that accurately depict your character.
when writing transgender characters, we will allow any face to play any gender identity, as long as you are not going against a trans person’s gender identity. for example, we would allow a hunter schafer faced character to play a trans woman, a cis woman, and transfemme person, BUT we would not allow players to play her as a trans man or transmasc person. if you are using a cis face to play a trans character that appears opposite of their presentation, then that’s totally fine! not all trans people want to have procedures done or take hormones, or some can’t! we just ask that people are open-minded, accepting, and remember the time that we’re in, things weren’t nearly as accessible as they may be today.
face claims
all characters must have a face claim, and all characters must be over the age of 18. we do NOT have a +/- between face/character ages, we just ask that the character’s graphics match the age that they appear. for example, joseph gordon levitt has resources from his younger years, which could realistically play a person in their early 20s. we do not allow faces that are deceased, currently incarcerated, or are considered problematic in nature. faces that are problematic in nature would include the likes of (but are not limited to): johnny depp (abuser), amber heard (abuser), armie hammer (sa allegations / abuser), michael fassbender (sa allegations), and noah schnapp (loud and proud zionist).
activity and canons
final nail has various “canon” characters. this just means that they are big players within the subplots of the site. these characters have more responsibility, and stricter activity rules than other characters do. canon characters are the only characters with set activity rules.
non-canon characters are simply subjected to a monthly interest check. however, we do have an expectation of activity in some way, so if you haven’t posted on that character in a while and there’s been no communication with us, we will be archiving them. you will always have the chance to unarchive any character by making a non-dev post of any type (comm or thread) with them and asking for said character to be unarchived.
canon characters are required to make at least two thread posts a month. these posts may be of any length (50+ wc), as long as they aren’t comm threads.
what will the site app be like? will it be pretty laid back where we don't feel pressured to have to put too much detail? like is a brief history with other creative things/ways to describe them okay and we can reveal some stuff through rp? :) <3
so, we feature a profile applications and while we do have freeform / plotting sections, both of these are relatively laid back! here's what we have in the guidebook about them:
plotter is for plothooks, or you can do it traditional shipper style - but, staff would greatly suggest using plothooks instead! freeform frankly, this doesn't have to be a whole thing. as long as we get some idea as to what your character is like, it can be as long or as short as you'd like it to be. it could be a series of images, it could be short line descriptions, it could be fun facts. we, frankly, don't care! as long as the lore is followed.
we super encourage you to reveal things through rp! in fact, we have some subplot stuff that will get dropped in a couple days which actively encourages you to keep character secrets! 😉 as long as these secrets follow the rules [ which will be posted tomorrow ], go absolutely buck wild if you want! super excited to see what you guys come up with!
