Smart - 55% of all rivers and streams (656,567 miles) in the US are ranked in "poor" condition, in the EPA's latest assessment (meaning they can't support healthy aquatic life). There are 13,144 miles where fish aren't save for human consumption - due to high levels of mercury. What are we doing/not doing? Annual profit from Chevron in 2012: $26.2 billion (the company's second highest ever). Amount Chevron was fined by state regulators for last year's Richmond Refinery fire (that sent 200 to the hospital from exposure to toxic fumes): $1 million. Amount of holdings by SF Employee Retirement Systems in fossil fuel companies: $500 million. Oh, I get it - money. Go take a walk in nature, while you can still breathe the air, see the trees, and watch the fish...but wait, you may have to drive to get there. CONUNDRUM! Now I get it, again. Let's find solutions!
Art - I was short on inspiration this week, due to a full docket of shows, but discovered encouragement from fellow tumblr and reader of The Artist's Way, Sam. I'm plugging her tumblr this week (http://findsam.tumblr.com), specifically her "Different" entry, because it spoke to me exactly where I needed understanding and a push. The resistance I have surrounding my art and new or significant projects is great - but it often takes the form of fear and avoidance. As working artists, we all feel the fear yet still push through and work. Thank you, Sam, for reminding me.
Heart - My parents got divorced when I was 10, and it rocked my little world. My sister just informed me that she and her husband are separating - they have 2 kids, the oldest is 10. Fuck, did this trigger me into a sad place of feeling powerless and scared! Then I took a breath and realized that I'm an adult, and so is my sister. We have grown and gained healthy coping tools. This will not be the same as it was when we were young. It will still suck, and be hard - but I can be there for my nephew (and niece) in a way that was helpful to me at that age. I can be there for my sister in a way that others weren't for my Mom. I also know that I can't "fix" anything nor "save" anyone - and that is the healthiest development of all. I can love, every day. I can write letters, every week. I can and I will. I can hold some hands while this tiny family walks a shitty road to a different place. This is change. This is growth. This is life.
