Gertie the Dinosaur (1914) - 1st Keyframe Animation - Winsor McCay

Sometimes called the world’s oldest cartoon (erroneously), it is still the first to be created using keyframe animation. This movie required Winsor McCay and his assistant John A. Fitzsimmons (who traced the backgrounds) to create 10,000 drawings, which they inked on rice paper and mounted on cardboard.

Fantasmagorie (1908) - World’s 1st DRAWN Animated Story

Published on Nov 21, 2013 Fantasmagorie, by Émile Cohl, is considered to be the first animated story in film. Though “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces” by J. Stuart Blackton pre-dates “Fantasmagorie” by 2 years, it did not serve as a narrative other than simply showing various facial expressions via the technique of hand-drawn animation.
