Why do you think that many monsters use the term "fallen down" when referring to death? Why not just say "died"?

This is actually a misconception. The term “fallen down” does not mean dead, and it’s only ever used in the lab entries by Alphys.

In his diary, Mettaton uses the similar term “fell down” to describe what happened to Shyren’s sister, who is one of the monsters brought to Alphys for experimentation and later becomes part of Lemon Bread.

The only other similar use of “fallen down” is in an unused text. 

UNUSED TEXT:(It’s a book labelled Monster History Part 6.) Read it Do notUnfortunately, monsters are not experienced with illness.However, when monsters are about to expire of age, they lie down, immobile.We call this state “Fallen Down.”A person who has Fallen Down will soon perish.In a way, this confusing situation was all too familiar.

In each of these examples, “fallen down” refers to a comatose state that monsters do not (usually) recover from. Every other use of “fallen down” or similar refers to someone physically falling down.

It is a rather common misconception that “fallen down” is used instead of “died” by the monsters. But this is far from the truth. Monsters do use the term “died" and other similar terms. Here is a variety of examples.

UNDYNE (IF SHYREN WAS KILLED):Do you think it was fun when I found out…?Shyren, who was just learning to sing……was dead, because of the whims of a single human?

UNDYNE:What the hell are humans made out of!?Anyone else would be DEAD by now!

SANS:i mean, look at yourself.you haven’t died a single time.

MONSTER TALE (LOOX):The next day.…The human died.

ASGORE:I remember the day after my son died.The entire underground was devoid of hope.

FLOWEY:But now, with YOUR help…He’s DEAD.

BURGERPANTS (GENOCIDE RUN):Huh? Everyone else is DEAD?

SNOWDRAKE’S FATHER (POST-PACIFIST):The doctah. She brought my wife. Back from the dead.

FLOWEY (HARD MODE):Hey.What’s the hold up!?Shouldn’t she be dead by now!?

SNOWDRAKE’S FATHER:Since his mothah passed on, he couldn’t stand. Living at home anymore.

LIBRARY BOOK (SCHOOL REPORT):Monster funerals, technically speaking, are cool as heck.When monsters get old and kick the bucket, they turn into dust.

Ultimately, monsters are only considered dead when they have turned to dust. The monsters that have “fallen down” are not dead yet.
