Sometimes an image just comes. Vivid. Strange. Fanciful. Uninvited. Like this one. Sometimes I know it’s origins. Sometimes I never figure that out. Sometimes these visions grow and expand. Present narratives I can’t escape. Sometimes they become a an entire book or film. This time I was able to find the threads. Two different images that did not seem to be linked in any possible way. Scroll through if you want. An old photo of a cowboy standing in shallow water and some reference photos of weird mud fish. Somehow a giant cup of coffee made a brief appearance. Finally the fish/creature presents the cowboy with a festive New Years greeting. Why I do not know. But I’m thinking on it. And that might lead to something. It does present the essential element necessary for a story: what happens next? Beats me. But if it’s interesting I’ll let you know. Starting my new year with a bang? Or a Squish? New art for @deankuipers - On Earth Day 2019, recommit to knowing one patch of dirt or water or sky. The one right out your door is best. Figure out who and what lives there and what they need in order to thrive; plant in it, be with your family in it, watch it day after day. Its thoughts are already your thoughts, so tune in. This is the real work. #initandofit #thedeercampbook Second in a series of animations by the great @ericbnyquist Book out May 14. #wildlife #trout season opener near you! #fishstories #nature #wild #outdoors #optoutside @outsidemagazine @bloomsburypublishing @hillnadell @ediblegardensla #illustration #bookstagram #literature #ericnyquist #drawing #illustration https://www.instagram.com/p/Bwj74QUh10n/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1cvydohwq0lxf
It’s Friday night. It’s raining. Perfect for a first look at my photo exhibit @takomabevco. Here’s your preview, but better in person. Particularly with a nice cup of java or glass of beer. Official reception to be announced. @mainstreettakoma - - Raising awareness (and funds) for the project work in #Newfoundland. Sure Hitchcock made all of us scared of birds, but what about flying fish! We're joining in with the #LibrariesofInstagram for the August challenge, #BoatsintheLibrary which is being hosted by @annielauriesbooks, @archibrarian, and @sfplbookarts! We found this great illustration of "Dodging Flying Fishes" in Fish Stories Alleged and Experienced: with a Little History Natural and Unnatural (1909) by Charles Frederick Holder and David Starr Jordan. Last year’s winner in a (rare) serious moment telling her fabulous fish tale, Mercedes Gonzalez from @justshopboutique. And yes, that is a trout on her head. Competition is fierce. And fairly absurd. They are, after all, fish stories. 😀 . You ready? Bring your best story or your best judging capabilities and an appetite for an amazing feast to Trout Tales at Spillian, Saturday April 27. Tix via the link in our bio.
