Head Over Heels

There was nothing significant of that day. It was not our anniversary nor was it any of our birthdays. Yet, that moment felt like it was straight out from a rom flick. With the way how everything just suddenly slows down, I honestly thought I was going nuts. But I was never sane the moment I met you. I found it ironic that as a writer, at this point of the paragraph there should already be personifications and oxymorons splattered all over. The only thing I could grasp on was you. Even the moon did no justice to distract me. All it did was to make you look even more beautiful. I was a sucker for your eyes, gazing at me with such love and mystery that I want to explore limitlessly. You stroke my forehead with ease, caring for me like I was made of glass. While your lips parted and your gaze grew with much adoration, the trees swayed casting shadows over us as time halted for that one second. Mind you, I had my doubts for love and its unrealistic views. I never agreed to the whole "He enchanted me..." blah blah nonsense. But for that one second, I was proven wrong. In that one second, I knew I was completely, utterly in love with you.

Different Faces of Me

Hello! So, this is linked to a video I’ve posted on YouTube about myself. It’s my application to a creative writing course that I really hope I could get in.

Anyway, if you’re lazy to watch the one minute video, no worries. I’ll be writing everything here - the reason behind what I did and a detailed explanation for each “face” that appeared in the video itself. Plus, additional facts about yours truly.

Let’s start with the reason behind the video. Well, I was thinking that if I took a video of myself just going on and on about who I am, it would bore my viewers and they wouldn’t get the full experience. I wanted to create a sense of connection, to let them fully know what kind of person I am and not just any random face on the net. So, I thought why not I dress up the part of each of my likings and explain more in detail about it in the video? With that idea, I went to find props and categorize facts about myself based on each “face” I’ve created. Turns out, I decided to go with the main three - The Writer, The Softball Player, and Default Me.

The Writer : It’s true, I’ve been writing since I was 10 and what started it all was an anime couple (canon to my eyes, but really it’s not). That started my fan fiction hunger about the couple and out of curiosity, I started crafting some of my own. That was how I realize how natural it feels to write. Besides writing, I did mention my love for reading. Thanks to my mom actually! Back when I was eight/nine-ish, she would always get me Nancy Drews and horror stories to devour on. During recess I always ALWAYS visit the school library. It was like my home. No joke.

Additional Facts : my English teacher was an English Demon. I mean, yeah she taught us both Science and English but she PRIORITIZES English all the time. So like, we could have four periods straight on English. Non-stop. We were always writing compositions after compositions while doing comprehension as our homework. But everything paid off, and thanks to her, my writing has improved drastically. She was the only one, the first one actually, who saw potential in my writing. Ms Mindy Ng, without your ways I wouldn’t be where I am now.

The Softball Player : Even though it’s been less than a year, this became a passion rather quickly. When I’m not writing, I’m usually up and about going to the gym, morning runs and playing softball with my friends. Yes, I’m currently in a club called SonIIques. But, I wish to venture more into the softball/baseball community. (And yes, I’m actually eyeing on SP Baseball club). Why softball? Well, it’s something I can’t explain. The thought of running in the fields, chasing yellow balls, hearing the loud thuds from catches and batting, under the scorching rays just excites me. Quite a lot.

Additional Facts : Besides softball, I was once in a Netball CCA during my primary school days and Badminton was something my entire cohort went ballistic last year (and mind you, last year was everyone’s NATIONAL exam, so you could understand how the teachers were feeling).

Default Me : I MEAN IT OKAY, I love to make friends, and to socialise. Among all my friends, I’m the one that’s ALWAYS down for anything. Be it crazy or sane or whatever. I’ll be there! And when I said that I’m sincere in whatever I do - from doing my homework to celebrating someone’s birthday, I’m always genuine with my thoughts and feelings. What I feel, I mean it! There is nothing that I do that doesn’t have my 100% effort. Besides that, the music playing in the background (Lush Life by Zara Larsson) happens to calm me down and relaxes me so yup! If you didnt actually infer from the beginning and the ending of the video, well I really like to dance to songs like Lush Life just for the heck of it!

Additional Facts : I’m not fluent in my own mother tongue, I can’t do household chores and I constantly watch cartoons like Steven Universe, The Amazing World of Gumball and Gravity Falls.

eid mubarak 2016

The fasting month has come to an end and here come’s the month of forgiveness - Syawal. It’s the season where one seeks forgiveness, celebrates the achievements made and have a proper closure to Ramadhan.

Hari Raya, also known as Eid Mubarak, happens to be the festive one as compare to Ramadhan which consist of soul strengthening and vigorous self-discipline. Many kids would prefer Eid over Ramadhan, because of the goodies, the sweet drinks and of course, the green packets. Whereas for adults, it varies from one another. Some would say Eid is more enjoyable because its an occasion where you rejoice with relatives and catch up over the lost time. Its that time of the year where aunties and uncles pass of remarks about your appearance, education and etc. Its that time of the year where you realize your baby cousin isn't a baby anymore. And its that time, you notice the changes and gushed over it excitedly over traditional delicacies.

Sounds like a lot of fun, right? Back during my young days, I would always tag along with my favourite uncle (I'll refer to him as Ngah) and visit his wife's side of the family. In total, there were four houses to go and this didn't happened during just one year. It was a repetitive kind of thing that kept going till my mom remarried. Then, my events for Eid slightly change. After the remarry, I would visit my father's side then my mom's. Afterwards, on the second day my family would host an open house for both sides to come (My stepdad happens to be the oldest in his family, and my mom was the same too which meant that in the family, we have to visit the oldest to the youngest).

That was how Eid was like for me. And let me tell you, it was either intense, fun, loads of $$$ or crazy. Just pure insane moments. But, as I'm growing older, well things fall apart. Now, Eid Mubarak is just another day on the calendar. So, if you asked me to pick Eid or Ramadhan, I'd say the latter. It's a lot more smaller, cosy and happens for a consecutive thirty days. Having dinner together with my mom and sister beats any festive celebration of nothingness.

And knowing this, my elder sister brought us along over to her in-laws. At first, I felt kind of outcasted but the longer we stayed there, the atmosphere kind of got to us. It was hectic, noisy, lively and very wow. When my grandma was still around, the house used to be like that. Filled with many siblings, cousins, aunties, uncles, granduncles & aunties, all chattering away and having fun as malay teleshows were aired on the screen. It had been too long since I felt something like this and honestly? It felt good to be in that environment once more.

But, hey that doesn't mean I've changed my mindset towards Eid. Always wished that I could go back in time, during my childhood times, and experience Hari Raya like how it used to be.

Yet nevertheless, I feel blessed and thankful for what Allah has given me x

Chapter 1 - The Abandoned House 

The wind was pushing me away with such gusto, it took every ounce of strength in me to advance. It was weird yet expected - December winds were something that should not be taken lightly. Although, this particular one was giving me the message that my presence was not needed. Nonetheless, I strive on, hands on my hat and my bag. Nothing was going to stop me from making a story. 

“My dear Elizabeth! You’re freezing to death and you still insist on writing those nonsensical tales!” proclaimed a shrill voice, impossibly overpowering the screams of the breeze. 

“Mom, I’m telling you I’m alright. And my stories aren’t nonsense, they’re a piece of gold. Now excuse me, I have to go. Bye” Before she could change my mind - which was never the case, I hung up. Shutting the doors behind me, I gasped in awe.

Before I came here, I did a little research on the abandoned house. From the information I’ve collected, it’s architecture is solid and rich with history. It’s a two-story house with about 10 rooms of which are 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 3 unknown rooms and 1 library with furniture still in place. This place, named by the owner himself, Cruxhelix Household used to belong to a rich family from the western part of England. It was during the sixties when the entire family faced a great tragedy. Without having any links or blood connections, the house was left on its own. Untouched. 

I began wandering around, finding a suitable place for me to get impressive ideas for my stories. After a good long 30 minutes, I found out that the info about the furniture was just a hoax. Most of the rooms stayed empty and storyless. Except for the living room, where a coffee table and a small couch stood pathetically. Most probably brought in by the homeless. Just as I was about to go back to the living room, I heard something dropped.

Turning around, the lights before me frantically flew around the room. Calm down girl, it’s just a book. Curious, I walked towards it, wondering if it’ll give me a quick buck or a creative adrenaline.The book was fragile, old and torn at the edges. It’s pages were all yellowish, and it was empty. What a bummer. But the texture appeals to me. Shoving it carefully into my bag, I tightened my scarf and scurried out from this damned place.
