SODA POP SIPPER #3: Fitz’s Coffee Cola

Fitz’s Bottling Company is based out of St.Louis, Missouri, and started as a hamburger stand. By 1947 they began making their own root beer, but by the mid 1980′s they had abandoned burgers to strictly make pop.

I have so far had 2 coffee based soft drinks before, and although I do not normally drink coffee, I quite enjoyed the coffee sodas. Fitz’s Coffee Cola was definitely more of a cola flavour than coffee. It was not unlike a bottle of coke with a splash of drip coffee that had been sitting in the pot since morning. The coffee flavour was much more evident on the finish, which was nice, but I had anticipated a much stronger coffee taste. The sweetness was nice, and I think the cane sugar was evidently more pleasant than if it were corn syrup.

I would give Fitz’s Coffe Cola 5/10. It wasn’t actively bad, but it wasn’t stunning. The flavour didn’t jump out as being particularly great or interesting. It was enjoyable, and would definitely be a pleasant change to more common brands, but I wouldn’t go out of your way for it.
