Pretentiousness: Why it Matters by Dan Fox
This is a fascinating essay touching on everything from the origins of the word to why it has become somewhat of a slur. It covers theatre, art, pop culture and class to give a really in depth understanding of why people or things are describes a pretentious, what that means and why, ultimately, a sign that people are pushing boundaries.
I studied art at university and I found it very interesting both from a theory point of view as well as how it related to experiences I have had in my time as an artist. It also just so happened to hit on many topics I find interesting anyway which was an added bonus. I would recommend to anyone interested in the topic or contemporary art or pop culture in general.
