The Bakehouse

Marjorie Sharpe was dozing off in her chair, awaiting the first arrival of footsteps at the front door. The bread was never late, never early. Always on time. And it didn’t matter if the valley was cold, or dark, or snowy -- and it was, which was why she’d spent the night there -- they opened at 6am, sharp. Father Rathmore would be there, prompt as ever, demanding his beignets and coffee, and damned if she wouldn’t be ready. 

A noise echoed behind her and she startled awake, blue eyes glancing beadily around. She checked her watch. Still early. Still late. Shifting, the woman reclined back in her chair again, drawing the blanket up to her chin, and she was very nearly asleep when -- rustle, slam, squeeeeak.

The flutter and thud of flour being strewn greeted her as the baker rounded the corner, flinging on the lamps. The room illuminated in a soft, golden glow, white flour streaked and all mixers -- six of them! -- on high. She shrieked, and was about to charge into the room -- Majorie was never one to run from danger -- when she spotted a pair of green, glimmering eyes.

“Oh, no. Not again.”

A poltergeist has taken up residence in Five Points. After wreaking havoc on the Post Office, and twining all the rhododendron leaves in Greengardens together, it moved onto The Porter Café, where it replaced caramel syrup for whiskey, vanilla for vodka, and the reverse -- resulting in some very inappropriate milkshakes. But it wasn’t spotted until Majorie Sharpe caught full sight of it in The Bakehouse this morning.

The poltergeist must be caught.

By order of the Watchmen, all citizens of Five Points are required to appear at their assigned location no later than sundown on December 15. The town will be holding a stakeout to capture the demon, and banish it back from the valley. Please bring adequate clothing, and ensure for childcare beforehand if necessary, as all participants will be expected to stay through sunrise.

It’s come to our attention that the break in at the post office has caused more havoc than a broken door jam and some upturned furniture. All the mail has been rifled through, and redirected to the wrong recipient. The culprit is still unknown and at large, and the following citizens have received some mail that doesn’t belong to them:

@arsenic-inyourveins - a brown paper package that’s leaking an unknown sticky substance. Is it honey? Hope so.

@banavett - 36 winter themed cards addressed to “M., The Love of My Life”. At least one is a glitter bomb.

@darkxkeyes - a brightly wrapped present that’s heavier than it looks. Is it... moving?

@devlin-burroughs - a package containing glass potion vials, a bottle of nightshade, and a recipe for a lemon meringue pie.

@georgie-sharpe - three letters with water stains that have smudged every part of the address except for first letter of the first name -- which is an “S”.

@imogenhayes​ - a package containing two erotic romance novels and a Wood’s bookstore receipt.

@lockedown-spencer - a large box that chimes like bells and won’t stop.

@minilocke​ - a package that’s been sealed shut with magic. Occasionally, a bubble escapes from between the paper seams.

@severin-ealing - a package containing a child’s doll with several doll sized outfits. Its eyes seem to follow you as you move.

@tempest-wood - a simple white envelope that occasionally chirps. 

@valko-rathmore - a box of cat food. No cat.

@verathetwentysomethingwitch​ - a box of fresh produce. Mostly bananas.

@wildmansoul - a package containing a hand knitted blanket with the letter “G” in one corner and two cans of peas.

@zadie-maclain - a simple note that reads “Sunflowers. 2pm” addressed to Valko Rathmore.

NOTICE from the ALLIED WATCHMEN OF FIVE POINTS 

Citizens: 

There has been a break-in at the Central Post Office, leading to the delay of letters and packages. We have reason to believe that the suspect is aggressive, and attacks are not singularly targeted. Please be alert when traveling after sundown, and report any unusual activity to the Watchmen at once.

 Behind the Glass @wildmansoul

Greengardens lived up to its name in spite of the weather. Tempest slipped through the open glass door into the humid air, and the rich, green vegetation that surrounded her on both sides. She didn’t see anyone near the door, though she was supposed to have a partner. To her right were several pots of artemisia. She paused to lean over. She took a sniff, enjoying their fresh, herbal scent for a moment. She flinched when something heavy hit the ground near the back of the building. Tempest jerked upright.

She picked up a small pot, and lobbed it toward the back of the store.
