Roman Mars is obsessed with flags — and after you watch this talk, you might be, too. These ubiquitous symbols of civic pride are often designed, well, prett...
So i watched this amazing video, where Roman Mars talks about his love of flags. As he talks about flags, about how even cities have flags, it sparks an interest for me. I think to myself, Hmm, i wonder what my city’s flag looks like...
Now If you watch the video, Roman Points out the 5 rules of map making.: 1. Keep is SIMPLE, i.e, something a child can draw from memory. 2. use meaningful symbolism, so you cant have a dragon in it just cause you like dragons. 3. use 2-3 basic colors, so nothing too hard to look at, like neon fucking pink. 4. NO LETTERING OR SEALS, EVER, NEVER, EVER, NEVER, EVER, *gasps for breath* NEVER. 5. Be distinctive or related, so something that when someone glances at your flag, they say “yes that is the flag for “insert name here” RAPID CITY FUCKING SOUTH DAKOTA DOES NOT FOLLOW THESE RULES. Well that’s a lie, it follows 2 out of 5 rules, which we all learned from grade school is failing, that’s 40% out of 100% so, i got time on my hands, so i start messing around with my own version of the flag. Now, for anyone from my town, if you ask them what is the most distinctive thing about our town, a lot of people would say the creek that runs through town, which our city is named after, Rapid Creek. So i try a flag with a creek in it, with the “star of the west” star on it.
Meh, I’ve seen worse. I dont really like the green, i mean, were snowy 9 months out of the year, and if its not snowy it sure the hell ain’t green. Take 2:
NAAAAH, I mean “star of the west” what the hell does that mean, i mean i have lived here a significant portion of my life, and i have no god damn idea what it means. Take 3:
Now for those of you who failed both Geography and American history, Mt. Rushmore is in South Dakota, and rapid city is a stones throw away from mount Rushmore, actually between Mt. Rushmore and the Sturgis Harley Davidson Motorcycle rally, its the reason why this town isn't a ghost town, Tourism is our #1 source of revenue where i live. BUT, back to the flag... there the freaking green is again. I mean, it feels like a damn lie. Take 4:
It looks like Mt Rushmore is swimming in Mountain Dew. I mean, its poetic, but it still feels wrong. So since Take 2 i have been talking to one of my supervisors/ Friends, and he says that its still green, and yellow would be better looking, and fit better. Take 5:
Mt. Rushmore seems to have spring a leak. A very gross one. Im about to throw in the towel, when he sends me this beauty. Cody’s Version:
I KNOW WHAT FEELS WRONG, I FORGOT THE FIRST RULE! i mean I’m 21, and i cant draw Mt freaking Rushmore even if i wanted to! i mean the heads are all turned and everything! what do you guys think? and while were on the topic, South Dakota’s state flag needs help too.
