Longing for the Past
She was back in Daein. Back where it began. The military had been overhauled and she’d joined in hopes of something better for herself. The hunger had stopped. Her combat skill alone warranted promotion after promotion but it proved to be not enough. She found herself at a pause. Her commanding officer was content in his position and lacked the zeal she had. During training exercises argument broke out.
“I am not taking orders from a dog.”
“Know your place. You may have a few of the higher ups favor but you’re underneath my command.”
“You don’t deserve to command. Where’s your sense of patriotism? Where is your strength?”
“Stubborn woman. I’m done with you.”
Her sword was unsheathed from the scabbard and she silently challenged him with eyes sharper than her sword. “You fight on my terms. Get on your steed.”

She faced him on horseback. A spectacle was made of it. His lance was like nothing she’d ever seen. A weapon as red as embers that ignited on whim. When they raced toward each other she did more than just dismount him with her lance. She caught his neck. And then took his rank.
Daylight crept in through the canopy above and disturbed her.
