This is gonna be a total PSA, but since I’m always yelling about sex worker rights, I got this sense that I don’t want to glamorize the work to young people. Young women come to me sometimes and tell me they are considering the option of going into sex work. It’s a delicate conversation to have because I fully believe in body autonomy and not speaking in ways that sway another’s choice. That said, I think it’s important to point out some realities that exist in sex work. As someone who is a big proponent for sexual freedom and has seen so many positive aspects to working in the industry and will continue to use my voice on behalf of labor rights, I also want to be clear, if you are considering doing the work there are important things you should know. Here are a few: 1. If you are filmed it NEVER goes away, consider what that means for the rest of your life. 2. Your family and your friends may abandon you. 3. It makes love relationships complicated. I wish it didn’t. It does. Those who understand are wonderful and supportive. Those who don’t, range from manipulative to dismissive to straight up abusive. 4. If you’re doing illegal sex work you could catch a case. Sex work cases follow you if you decide to change professions and want to do something like teaching for example. 5. Sex work is always around, but it’s an unstable industry. You can’t rely on set income. 6. There’s no retirement plan. 7. There’s no health care. Essentially it’s a business where you gotta handle your own shit. 8. It’s possible you will experience trauma at some point. Not all people are safe. 9. You will be choosing to join the ranks of some of the most marginalized, misunderstood and stigmatized people. No matter what end of sex work you choose-stripper, porn, dominatrix, escort, cam or the other wonderful, talented varieties-whether or not you provide sexual services-you will now be a whore in the eyes of much of society. If you fully understand the implications of the choice, and it still sounds like something you want to do, then find your tribe and a mentor and work safe. Work safe, ethical and aware-for yourself and for others. @tommyophotos #flashbackphoto https://www.instagram.com/p/By5aF9eDK0d/?igshid=1f22doj84im5m
